Job Summary:
NRG Energy is seeking a Communications Manager to support the Corporate Communications function with a primary focus on external communications and media relations. The successful candidate will advise stakeholders on media strategy, public engagement and executive level communications, as well as act as a company spokesperson, develop communications plans, create written communications including press releases, key messages/talking points and social media posts.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
- Integrate closely with internal clients to understand communication needs of the business
- Anticipate/recognize potential issues and advise appropriate courses of action
- Develop communication plans, media messages, press releases and supporting materials
- Identify, analyze and recommend speaking opportunities for company executives
- Serve as media spokesperson
- Media train subject matter experts who talk with the news media
- Develop proactive storylines and pitch to news media
- Manage crisis and reputational media issues
- Review and manage work of external agencies when needed
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Communication or related field from an accredited college or university
- 7+ years of media relations experience, including managing adverse issues and crisis response
- 5+ years of managing communications strategy, including crisis communications
- Must have proven relationships with media including media placements and effective measurement of results
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced degree in Communications, Public Relations or a related field
- Energy or other manufacturing industry experience is a plus
- Agency experience is a plus
Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Detail-oriented in all work, ability to multi-task, and solid project management skills
- Superb verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
