Job Purpose

The data science team at MX is focused on solving the company's most computationally and analytically complex problems using statistical and machine learning methods. The work is challenging, engaging, and directly influences MX's portfolio of products and services. If you're passionate about asking good questions and applying modern data science tools in a fast-paced, intellectually engaging environment, you'll enjoy working at MX in the role of Senior Manager, Data Science.

As a Senior Manager within the Data Science function, you'll lead a team of advanced analytics professionals as they leverage a world-class financial data asset to (a) perform in-depth, consumer-level analytics, (b) lead big data research and discovery projects, (c) increase overall system accuracy, (d) design and execute operational tests, and (e) automate important (but repetitive) tasks. In addition, you'll influence the overall goals and direction of the data science function through your business acumen, decision quality, and knack for thinking about future possibilities. You should enjoy turning data and analytic results into digestible and engaging stories as well as working closely with colleagues to identify high-value opportunities. The ability to inspire, develop, and manage staff is essential, as are solid project management skills. Your track record of nurturing analytic talent, combined with your strong analytic training, superior ambiguity tolerance, and hands-on approach to solving problems, will mark you as an ideal candidate for this role.

As part of MX's thriving analytic organization, you'll enjoy autonomy and the ability to make a real difference in a successful and high-growth company. As you collaborate with other creative and enthusiastic team members you'll be rewarded and recognized for your high-caliber work. MX's values are central to the company's success, and you'll live by questioning assumptions and taking initiative, advancing our data-driven approach to solving problems, and showing empathy and a commitment to radical honesty in equal measure.

What you'll get to do
  • Build, develop, and manage a high-performance team of 4-12 data scientists and/or analysts through direct coaching and mentorship focused on analytical best practices, data visualization, storytelling, and personal career development
  • Provide hands-on guidance as your team builds, enhances, and maintains predictive models focused on data recognition and categorization, credit risk and fraud detection, consumer financial behavior, and feature enhancement
  • Work with senior staff to identify strategic goals and targets, develop tactics to achieve them, and contribute to the evolution and dissemination of departmental strategy
  • Lead modelling projects and reviews, operational tests (e.g., A/B and multivariate), data mining and exploratory work, and the creation of new data assets
  • Translate unstructured business problems into well-defined and tractable analytic/modelling projects
  • Provide analytic leadership within the MX community, primarily focused on identifying new opportunities to improve revenue and cost performance through the application of advanced analytic methods and motivating colleagues and staff to reach further and achieve more through the thoughtful application of quantitative tools and reasoning
  • Work closely with partners and stakeholder groups to understand long-term market needs and drive data initiatives beyond our current product portfolio
  • Oversee research projects designed to uncover and understand new tools, methods, and approaches that can strengthen MX's data science platform
  • Develop and deliver presentations and memoranda to communicate key messages and findings to colleagues and senior leaders

You'll do it using your
  • Master's degree (Ph.D. preferred) in a quantitative discipline, including significant coursework in statistics, econometrics, or a related field (or equivalent experience); prior exposure to behavioral economics or consumer psychology would be helpful
  • Practitioner/manager background likely to include (a) 5+ years of "hands-on" experience building predictive models and (b) 6+ years of experience managing analytic teams as they work to improve core business metrics (e.g., revenue, EBITDA, or net income); extra points for experience with consumer credit risk and/or time spent in business/management consulting roles
  • Working knowledge of one or more structured programming languages for statistical and/or numeric computing (e.g., Python, R, or Scala) and exposure to modern data science environments (e.g., cloud, Jupyter, and git) would be beneficial
  • Experience with (a) one or more of logistic regression, generalized linear models, or categorical data analysis and (b) multiple machine learning approaches (e.g., k-means clustering, SVM, random forest, or PCA)
  • Critical thinking skills, intellectual curiosity, and a willingness to keep looking for better solutions
  • Drive to tackle demanding goals with enthusiasm, tenacity in the face of stubborn obstacles, and interest in pursuing personal and technical development alongside other commitments
  • Commitment to client needs and satisfaction, humility in the face of constructive feedback, and production of high-quality work that builds trust and confidence with stakeholders
  • Ability to translate strategic mission objectives into an analytical framework, project plan, and action items

You'll fit in by
  • Collaborating with members of the Sales/Partnerships, Marketing, and Operations teams
  • Embracing the challenge of creating something from nothing and living your passion for mathematical problem solving
  • Being resourceful, creative, and tenacious
  • Assuming positive intent and communicating with skilled candor and respect

You'll love it because
  • The data science team is dedicated to solving important and high-impact questions unconstrained by assumptions or approach
  • You'll have the opportunity to work in a successful, fast moving, mission-driven company
  • You'll access growth opportunities and collaborate with highly motivated, intellectually curious, and genuinely nice colleagues
