We are seeking a Senior Manager, Database Engineering (DevSecOps) who is passionate about delivering technology products and platforms across the organization. The Senior Technology Manager's primary responsibility is to partner with their business areas and provide technology solutions and services that help deliver CarMax's strategic mission and plans. This includes development of long and short-term technology solutions that address business goals and deliver improved profitability, efficiency, and an unrivaled customer experience.

What you will do - Essential Responsibilities

• Lead a portfolio of diverse Database technology projects and a team of technologist and developers with deep experience in Database technologies to create solutions that help meet needs for the company
• Share your passion for staying on top of tech trends, experimenting with, and learning new technologies, participating in internal & external technology communities, mentoring other members of the engineering community, and from time to time, be asked to code or evaluate code
• Collaborate with business partners and deliver robust technology solutions that drive powerful experiences to help millions of CarMax customers get into their dream car!
• Design and implement a security first approach to all new design and architecture to truly build a DevSecOps Team
• Identify the appropriate goals for the teams, prioritizing objectives and provide a holistic approach to solution recommendations that includes ROI, time to market, scalability as well as alternative recommendations
• Create clear role expectations and develop associates to reach their full potential - understand their goals and needs, partner in their development, provide advice, feedback, training, and advocacy

• Continue to grow one's knowledge base and stay current with industry trends while also formulating a technology plan for each business area based on in-depth understanding of the current business needs and their future direction
• Work Location and Arrangement: Work location is flexible if approved by the Company except that position may not be performed remotely from Hawaii or Colorado

Purpose of the role

The Senior Manager for Database Engineering will lead a team of advanced and entry level engineers to help enable CarMax's Cloud Journey using a security first approach. As a leader within the organization, you will be results-oriented, data-driven, and have a proven track record in influencing outcomes without direct decision-making authority. The Senior Manager will not only be responsible for short-term and long-term project/strategy planning but will directly influence the technology journey within CarMax. The Senior Manager will be comfortable guiding teams to build a robust technology environment and be passionate about availability and security.

The Senior Manager will lead a team of associates by setting performance standards and motivating associates to perform quality work. The Senior Manager is responsible for identifying high performing talent, gaps in talent, and train and develops associates to close the gaps. The Manager mentors and develops future leaders in courageous leadership, associate development, and communication skills.

• 10+ years of relevant work experience across a broad spectrum of classic and emerging database technologies and features
• 5 years of experience working with cross functional teams
• 3+ years' experience managing direct reports

Preferred Qualifications

• 15+ years of relevant work experience across a broad spectrum of classic and emerging database technologies and features
• Mastery over database security, backups, high availability, disaster recovery, resiliency, observability, and performance
• Subject matter expert in the context of database configuration for everything related to infrastructure, including servers, virtualization, storage, networking, firewalls
• Hands-on experience designing and operating mission critical database systems at scale across public cloud and multiple datacenters that have regulatory and compliance requirements
• Experience working with various database technologies including SQL Server, SAP ASE (Sybase), Oracle, Azure SQLDB, CosmosDB, MongoDB
• Ability to identify and recommend opportunities for automation and continuous improvement. Master in CI/CD pipelines using tools such as GitHub, Ansible, Liquibase, Azure DevOps (VSTS), Team City, to deploy and automate database processes. Ancillary database tool creation using modern coding languages (Java, C#, Python, etc.)
• Deep level expertise with scripting and automation across both Windows and Linux operating systems
• Ability to translate strategy into deliverable tasks
• Provide deep level expertise and resolve issues during technical escalations. Detailed documentation and regular knowledge sharing in areas of expertise
• Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal communication skills who understands how to communicate at all levels of an organization
• Extreme ownership, customer service, and a fearless technical leader who is a role-model for other associates in the organization
