About the Opportunity
Reporting to the Director of Digital Engagement, this role stands at the helm of the Academy’s global digital engagement and content-creation work, driving our social-media ecosystem, virtual programming, paid-social advertising, and more. In this capacity, the DE Sr. Manager is responsible for the work and growth of a team of talented DE Specialists, providing DE-related support to a wide range of Academy departments, and thought-partnering with the Director of Digital Engagement to establish and execute on DE goals, strategy, and best practices.

This position is based in San Francisco, California. It is a hybrid of onsite/work from home in California, but requires being physically onsite a minimum of three days per week. About the Digital-Engagement Team
Part of the Academy’s Experience Division, the Digital Engagement department is responsible for digital-content creation and engagement strategies for the Academy as a whole, and each of its three global initiatives. Leveraging a 3MM+ 4-brand social-media ecosystem, a wide range of digital platforms and tools, and collaborative work with internal and external partners, the 5-person DE team creates best-in-class digital storytelling that works to advance the Academy’s mission by creating deeper connections between people and nature.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead content creation and execution across all Digital-Engagement owned platforms, including but not limited to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, and LinkedIn. (Includes Brand accounts and our directly managed sub-brands bioGraphic, NightLife, and BigPicture.)
  • Directly manage two Digital-Engagement Specialists, and oversee 25% of the Thriving California DE Specialist’s team-related work
  • Partner with the Director of Digital-Engagement to identify content priorities based on the Academy’s mission, major initiatives, and visitation priorities and to develop and execute high-level digital strategies that drive supporting KPIs
  • Oversee DE’s paid-social advertising program for internal departments, and directly manage the paid-social budget and execution for the Academy’s NightLife series
  • Lead the Academy’s livestream strategy, working collaboratively across a wide range of departments to set production standards for livestreams, hybrid events, and virtual programming, providing direct guidance and support where needed. Includes management of the Academy’s Livestream Studio
  • Partner with Membership to continuously evolve and optimize digital programming and community-building
  • Lead reputation and analytics work for DE-owned platforms, including social-care across DE-owned platforms and third-party review sites, as well as metrics-collection and reporting for all owned accounts
  • Drive DE special projects, museum-based influencer programs, and on-the-floor activation efforts to connect visitors and audiences more compellingly to Academy work
  • Maintain and deepen DE’s network of critical relationships with a wide range of internal and external partners, a key factor in our ability to create best-in-class content
  • Lead DE efforts to provide a wide range of additional direct support for internal departments/partners, including training and consultations

Qualifications
EXPERIENCE and/or EDUCATION:
The ideal candidate will possess a combination of the following, and/or equivalent experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Creative Writing, Communications, Science, Marketing, Liberal Arts, or related area of study
  • Ten (10)+ years of experience in communications, digital engagement, social media, or comparable combination
  • 6+ years experience representing a brand on social media, paid and organic
  • 2+ years experience managing a team

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Strong writer and editor with an excellent radar for voice and tone, and the ability to modulate their own writing style to match
  • Gifted storyteller with a proven ability to iterate stories across platforms on behalf of an organization or brand
  • Professional-level fluency in core social media platforms (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube), including paid and organic, plus a solid understanding of best practices and industry trends
  • Demonstrated commitment to supporting and evolving a team
  • Demonstrated background in or passion for science and nature
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups or individuals

Compensation and Benefits
Hiring range: $110,000-$120,000
Schedule: Full-Time, 40 hours per week

Starting salary will vary based on experience and relevant skills/knowledge set.

The Academy offers a total compensation package that emphasizes both base salary and comprehensive benefits.
