The Opportunity

The Senior Manager, Strategic Initiatives is a seasoned Project Manager, responsible for all activities related to the development of health care related initiatives for fundraising opportunities and Foundation funded projects on behalf of donors. Including preparation of business cases and donor proposals; approved initiative implementation monitoring; tracking of proponent accountability and deliverables; and coordination of donor impact with the respective Foundation departments. Within the charitable sector, the work of developing new fundable opportunities is often referred to as strategic initiatives. With a growing number of opportunities, a full-time role is required to design and manage the process from concepts through to completion. Fundraising and funding initiatives are aligned with organizational priorities including funding criteria and measurable health care impact and must resonate with donors.

Reporting directly to the President & CEO and working closely with the Chief Philanthropy Officer (CPO), the Senior Manager will support their leadership work with physicians and senior leaders at Vancouver Coastal Health – Richmond (VCH-Richmond) or other external providers to ensure initiatives are evidence-informed, scalable, and positioned for successful funding and implementation.

The successful candidate is a forward-thinking strategist, highly skilled verbal communicator and proven talent as a writer, in addition to being an experienced, effective project management leader. They must be able to translate medical related information into clear, accessible language for diverse donor audiences. They have proven their ability to build positive relationships and credibility, ensuring that the Foundation can confidently promote the initiatives that it seeks donor support for. Ultimately, the Senior Manager, Strategic Initiatives plays a critical role in advancing the Foundation’s long-term vision and strategic plan.

Key Areas of Responsibility

Project Management & Strategic Initiative Delivery

  • Attend meetings with the CEO & CPO with health care clinicians and health care leadership, documenting the discussions, prepare minutes with action items, including critical dates and then initiate the project management of the initiative
  • Prepare briefing materials, coordinate follow-up meetings, track activity/actions, and ensure deliverables are fulfilled in a timely manner
  • Lead strategic initiatives from concept through delivery, managing scope, timelines, milestones, identifying dependencies, assessing risks, cross-functional coordination, and provide progress reporting as required
  • Shape and refine initiative concepts to ensure they are evidence-informed, doable, and aligned with Foundation’s goals. Understand what is needed to resonate with donor interests and generate philanthropic support
  • Build strong relationships with clinicians and senior leaders at VCH-Richmond to facilitate efficient operations overall
  • Develop a solid understanding of funding processes and priority projects—including capital initiatives equipment, programs, research, etc.

Business Case & Fundraising Proposal Development

  • Research and write compelling business cases that articulate the opportunity to improve care delivery, clarity about the patient care needs, benefits to stakeholders and articulate the successful measurable impact.
  • Write donor proposals that also inform production of campaign materials, converting approved business cases into clear, donor-ready content.
  • Work closely with CPO to ensure proposals align with donor interests and fundraising campaign objectives.

Funding Commitments; Fulfillment & Accountability

  • Monitor strategic initiative funding commitments to ensure fulfillment, accountability, and alignment with approved objectives.
  • Maintain clear oversight of all funded initiatives, coordinating between the Foundation and VCH-Richmond. This includes communication with VCH Finance, Project Management Office, etc.
  • Track and follow up on Letters of Commitment and all related agreements, ensuring deliverables, reporting requirements, and conditions are met.
  • Proactively identify risks, concerns, or gaps that may affect delivery toward approved commitments; recommend mitigation strategies.
  • Liaise with Donor Relations to facilitate donor stewardship through the development of impact-focused content and reporting.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Minimum 7-10 years of progressive experience in strategic initiative development, project management, or related type of role. Experience in health care, philanthropy is an asset but not essential
  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration or communications, Project management certification is an asset, and an equivalent combination of education and experience will be also considered.
  • Demonstrated experience researching, developing, and writing clear, compelling business cases and customer/donor proposals
  • Proven track record of leading complex, cross-functional initiatives from concept through execution, with measurable outcomes.
  • Experience providing direct support to senior leadership, including preparation of briefing materials, decision support, and follow-up on actions.
  • Experience in collaborating effectively with external partners.
  • Experience monitoring funding commitments, agreements, or projects to support accountability, delivery, and impact.

Skills & Abilities

  • Strategic thinking including the ability to analyze, synthesize, and translate complex clinical, financial, etc. information.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex information into clear, accessible language for diverse audiences, including donors, senior leaders, and partners.
  • Project management capability, including planning, prioritization, coordination, and tracking of multiple initiatives simultaneously.
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail and follow-through.
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills, with the ability to drive results effectively across teams and with external stakeholders.
  • Sound judgment and problem-solving skills, with the ability to navigate ambiguity and operate effectively in evolving environments.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
