The Senior Manager, Sustainability Engagement will enable effective internal and external communication of BD's ESG strategy and performance against 2030+ Sustainability commitments, that will drive stakeholder awareness and engagement, and support BDs 2030+ commitment to Transparency.
Reporting to the Director, Sustainability, the Senior Manager, Sustainability Engagement will be responsible for the successful development and distribution of materials across a variety of channels. This includes development and publication of BDs annual ESG report; coordination and submission of ESG disclosures to third parties, including CDP and ratings companies; analyzing BD's ESG performance measurements (including vs peers); managing quarterly progress reports and dashboards; tracking of emerging global requirements (regulatory and voluntary) for reporting of ESG issues; development of external communications materials, including materials to support internal partners who engage directly with BD's stakeholder; and development of the central EHS, Sustainability and Product Stewardship teams internal communications
The successful candidate will be a sustainability subject matter expert and talented storyteller who is a thinker and a doer, adept at using communication and analytics to accelerate stakeholder communication and engagement efforts. Job Responsibilities: (Primary Duties, Roles, and/or Authorities)
- Develop and publish BDs annual ESG report, incorporating disclosure requirements from frameworks such as TCFD, SASB and GRI.
- Coordinate completion and submission of ESG disclosures to third parties, including CDP, DJSI, Ecovadis and verifying information published by raters such as MSCI and JUST. Analyze outputs of third-party assessments - including performance against peers - in order to proactively strengthen BDs ESG disclosures and transparency.
- Track development of existing regulatory and voluntary disclosure frameworks, to proactively handle anticipated requirements.
- Develop and lead quarterly progress reports and dashboards to communicate progress against 2030+ goals.
- Develop and maintain tools to assist stakeholder facing teams. This includes supporting business and regional teams to respond to customer enquiries, developing processes / tools to enable teams to respond themselves where applicable.
- Partner with central, regional and business teams to identify and support development of material to communicate aspects of our 2030+ program to external stakeholders and drive engagement; support central regional and business teams to identify messages and stories to use as proof points.
- Contribute to the development of strategy to strengthen ESG presence on bd.com; coordinate implementation and maintenance of content.
- Responsible for the central EHS, Sustainability and Product Stewardship teams internal communications that will increase associate awareness and engagement. This includes management of Maxwell sites, communication and promotion of new policies, standards and processes and supporting associate engagement events such as Earth Week. Develop processes to measure effectiveness of internal communications and awareness.
- Integrate insights and use key integration points across multiple data points/functions (i.e. Sustainable Operations, Responsible Sourcing and SMTI) to develop core messaging that can be used to achieve greater engagement around our 2030+ sustainability strategy.
- Create and maintain a library of supporting content for communications including proof points, success stories, imagery, and toolkits. Review creative concepts to ensure effective alignment with our business strategy, goals, and BD brand identity.
- Align Sustainability communications plans and tactics with Corporate Communications to ensure consistency of message with broader company goals and to also ensure appropriate level of detail, timing and tone vis a vis other corporate plans. Partner with the central communications team to develop external messaging material for use across existing channels, including social media.
- Inspire, engage, and align internal and external audiences in telling BD's ESG and 2030+ story. Promote, enhance and protect BD's reputation to both internal and external audiences.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 3-5 years of Sustainability / ESG communications experience, including development of ESG reports, using ESG reporting frameworks including GRI, SASB and TCFD.
- Experience in a professional communications role with demonstrated experience in internal and external communications, and content strategy preferred.
- Experience in a publicly traded company and/or regulated industry preferred.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Must have experience in developing and / or drafting content for external ESG reports, using frameworks such as TCFD, SASB and GRI.
- The ability to develop strategy and implement tactically is required; this role is for a problem solver and a doer. Must have experience creating and developing strategy in addition to implementation and execution.
- The incumbent will have demonstrated experience creating sustainability specific communications plans in conjunction with advice and counsel from the central communications team.
- Intuition and ability to ask inquisitive questions and connect the dots across various initiatives and teams. Ability to see the big picture and also dive into the details.
- Should have experience in writing and creating long- and short-form content across a number of channels that is clear, simple and engaging.
- Must have demonstrated experience in using story-telling to write compelling internal and external communications/narratives that engage and invite trust across BDs collaborator groups.
- Demonstrated mastery in modern communications channels and tactics such as social and digital media, intranet, etc. Knowledge of Microsoft 360 platforms including SharePoint, Microsoft Teams, Yammer, and other associated 360 applications used in internal communications.
- Experience effectively working across a global matrixed organization and handling a variety of partners and audiences. Executive presence - demonstrated ability to work with high level leaders.
- Excellent customer service orientation, flexible attitude and adaptable to change.
- Strong commitment to excellence with an ability to thrive under tight deadlines and multi-task to prioritize projects and communicate priorities to partners. Results oriented with an ability to implement and complete measurable results.
- Ability to maintain discretion and appropriately handle confidential information.
