The Senior Mechanical Engineer will be part of the team responsible for mechanical design, analysis, and release of components, and systems associated with the development of cardiovascular equipment, from concept through production launch. In this role, you will have an impact in developing, designing, and supporting next-generation fitness equipment for both commercial and consumer markets.
Primary Responsibilities
  • The individual will be responsible for the design, development, testing, analysis, production, construction, maintenance, and/or operation of major cardiovascular development programs at Life Fitness.
  • All development phases, working with industrial design on preliminary design, identifying manufacturing methods for metal and plastic fabrication, analytical testing and prototype performance evaluation, engineering documentation, and life cycle maintenance.
  • Contribute as a project lead, create and maintain a project timeline to meet deliverable dates and deliver the product to the market on time and within budget.
  • Proven leadership of significant projects and/or programs including cross functional teams, managing a schedule, maintaining costs, and meeting deliverables.
  • Conduct, contribute and participate in department improvement teams
  • Mentor ME I and ME II engineers.

Principal Accountabilities
  • As a fully competent engineer, independently evaluates, selects and applies standard engineering techniques, procedures and criteria, using judgment in making adaptations and modifications.
  • Devises new approaches to problems encountered.
  • Evaluate feasibility of design ideas based on factors such as appearance, safety, function, serviceability, budget, production costs/methods, and market characteristics.
  • Maintain direct accountability for all standards that apply to the product lines to which they are assigned including drawings (GD&T), BOMs and build standards.
  • Maintain and write thorough engineering specifications based on the marketing criteria and engineering design intent.
  • Create and manage a risk analysis for each project and update risk sheet for each phase of the project, and able to plan for contingencies and know when to invoke them.
  • Designs, develops, and tests all aspects of mechanical components and equipment using SolidWorks to portray design intent.
  • Oversees the development of design concepts and test criteria. Coordinates tests plans for system and component level development.
  • Perform engineering analysis: FEA, dynamic simulations, design calculations, tolerance analysis and any other design analysis needed to prove out the feasibility of the design.
  • Working with industrial design group on preliminary concepts, identifying methods for plastics fabrication, design per color-material-finish requirements, and establishing piece part break-outs
  • Evaluate new plastic technologies and new mating strategy between plastics and metals structure.
  • Manages activities with Procurement, Purchasing, and external suppliers - molders and toolmakers.
  • Participate in industry trade shows, educational seminars and vendor training as required.
  • Maintain knowledge base of industry news, technology and benchmarks.
  • Light travel.

Required Skills, Abilities, and Knowledge
  • A certain degree of creativity, latitude, and independence is required.
  • Has knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures pertaining to the mechanical engineering discipline.
  • Knowledge of the tools utilized in quality control such as DFMEA and structural analysis serviceability, budget, production costs/methods and market characteristics.
  • Machine Design experience with weldments, bearings, metal fabrication (sheet metal, extrusions, castings) and moving mechanisms or drives (motors, drive system, mechanical system).
  • Component Design experience with plastics production methods (injection, thermoform, blow mold, extrusions) that comply with aesthetics, optimum molding performance, environment, cost, manufacturability and regulatory requirements.
  • Proficient in Advanced Surface Modeling and Complex Modeling techniques
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills with the ability to multitask while maintaining project priorities within tight timelines

Experience
  • 7+ years' experience in related field. Through knowledge of theory, principle and procedures.

Education
  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • M.S. in Mechanical Engineering preferred.
