The Role

Sixth Street’s Infrastructure Engineering team is looking for a talented Senior Network Engineer interested in growing their career in a small, fast-moving technical team with big goals. The successful candidate will need to be comfortable leading on multiple fronts at a time: physical office networks, virtual Cloud networks and VPN connectivity. While we value the ability to focus on specific network-related topics and deeply engage on network-related topics, the ideal candidate will be required to display good context switching capabilities. Being a thought leader and playing an architect-level role on network questions will be expected while demonstrating a strong desire and ability to debug and fix network related problems with technology users. When things get challenging, a successful Senior Network Engineer at Sixth Street will collaborate with the Infrastructure and Cybersecurity teams, demonstrate ownership while displaying leadership with all individual contributors involved in Sixth Street’s network components and dependencies. 

 
This is a full-time role based in one of Sixth Street’s offices in the United States, or remote for candidates who demonstrate significant and relevant experience. Some travel, both in the US and internationally, will be required to support Sixth Street’s rapid network expansions in existing and new offices. The Senior Network Engineer role is part of the Infrastructure Engineering Team at Sixth Street, which is a nimble team that focusses on four practices to leverage technology in modern and scalable ways: Service Desk, Platform, Office Buildouts and Workplace Technology. In this role you will also have opportunities to work closely with in-house technologists on software development teams, collaborate with your peers on the Infrastructure team, interact with external vendors as well as end users. You will be contributing to Sixth Street Engineering’s long-term technology vision that drives our infrastructure and will focus on the day-to-day implementation and expansion of our Cloud environment. 

Core Responsibilities 

• Demonstrates strong network infrastructure skills. At Sixth Street we don’t just talk about our infrastructure. We strive to have folks who will bring in a vast amount of experience which will let them get deeply involved in the architecture, implementation and operations of our networks. Ideal candidates can easily switch between physical and virtual network implementations and will assist with networking questions from the software development space.
• Makes cloud networking look easy. At Sixth Street we don’t look at the Cloud as hype but rather as a market differentiator. Sixth Street’s vision is to heavily leverage modern Cloud technologies to build better products and be the leader in our industry. Successful candidates will be expected to know AWS networking in and out and understand the Cloud is not just a fractional lease data center but an Application Programming Interface (API) atop physical and real-world components we instrument to make technology look like magic. We firmly believe in infrastructure-as-code at all levels, including networking.
• Is accountable for our physical office networks. Sixth Street has deployed independent physical networks in its various offices all over the world. These mission critical networks require constant performance monitoring, patching and timely responses when issues are reported. Our offices is where the magic happens, downtime is never an option.  
• Virtual Private Networks and Zero Trust. Sixth Street has deployed VPN solutions to allow its software developers and users to access private applications. In collaboration with our Cybersecurity team, the Senior Network Engineer will be expected to handle a portion of the operational responsibilities attached to those VPN solutions and guide the firm on our path to Zero Trust.
• Collaborates and interacts with all Engineering teams. Sixth Street Engineering is a small group. We can only function this way when Engineering team members document, build, share and collaborate to get things done. The Senior Network Engineer will be expected to work closely with other teams to investigate, diagnose and resolve problems that may have a network implication. In several cases, you will need to demonstrate leadership capabilities by driving investigations from the beginning to the end and communicating outcomes to leadership.

Preferred Skills and Experience

• Proven, expert-level experience with the Cisco Meraki ecosystem (firewalls, switches, access points, cloud-based control plane, monitoring capabilities) 
• Proven, expert-level experience with AWS networking (AWS virtual network appliance, VPCs, security groups, routing)
• Strong knowledge of fundamental network concepts such as:
  • Physical layer: Cabling, Ethernet, Wifi, Access Points, Switching
  • IP connectivity, routing, firewalling
  • DNS, both for internal and external networks
  • Transport level protocols, applications-level services
  • Network security concepts  

• Familiarity with vendor management in the network space, including cabling and internet circuits vendors 
• Experienced at troubleshooting network-related issues and digging into the network and application stacks to identify a root cause 
• Highly motivated, entrepreneurial, self-managed and team-oriented candidates with strong problem-solving skills 
• At least ten years of proven experience in Network Engineering. Relevant degree in Computer Science or Electrical/Software Engineering is preferred but not strictly required
• Experienced at communicating tasks with individual contributors and sharing status with key stakeholders  
• Expert in the design and implementation of network based on firm and environment growth projects
• Experience public cloud concepts such as Infrastructure-as-Code (AWS CDK and CloudFormation), cost monitoring and control, IAM, CI/CD pipelines applied to networking resources
• Understanding of modern application architectures: Platform as a Service, SaaS, microservices as well as application architectures based on the REST API
• Familiarity with the Linux ecosystem and toolset: Ubuntu and/or Red Hat derivatives, related networking tools, Linux network subsystems and services, fluency at leveraging the Linux command line interface and scripting
• Familiarity with the Microsoft ecosystem and toolset: Windows operating system and related networking tools, Active Directory and network services
• Comfortable working in a high growth, iterative and collaborative environment with frequent interactions with Platform, software development, Workplace Technology and Cybersecurity teams  
• Awareness of Workplace Technology functions such as physical/virtual desktops, central device management capabilities, end-user device monitoring  
• Hands-on experience with common IT management and communication tools like Jira and Confluence  
• Comfortable with remote work using tools such as Zoom, Slack and Box 
• Possesses a strong sense of urgency and prioritization; ability to execute quickly and efficiently with strong attention to detail while keeping track of multiple parallel projects 
• Strong verbal and written communication abilities
