Under the direction of an attorney, provides legal support services for internal counsel with an emphasis on matters related to insurance regulatory and first-party insurance claims and operational concerns. Responsibilities may require dealing with sensitive legal and business information.
The preferred location for this role is Chicago, IL, however, candidates near any CNA office will be considered.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Performs a combination of duties in accordance with departmental guidelines:
  • Compile, organize, and assess materials related to contested claims.
  • Coordinate document productions and subpoena responses.
  • Draft releases and settlement agreements.
  • Conduct legal research and assist in the compilation of multi-state surveys.
  • Compile, organize, and archive legal opinions and litigation materials.
  • Assist team members with various legal initiatives and/or lead projects under tight deadlines. Work collaboratively with internal colleagues on various projects.
  • Monitor matters and escalate issues requiring attorney involvement.
  • Maintain internal records in compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations and document retention requirements.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
  • In-depth knowledge and application of legal research tools, legal theories and insurance practices.
  • Strong analytical and drafting skills.
  • Excellent collaboration skills.
  • Strong computer skills, including use of Excel and other Microsoft Office suite and legal research tools (Westlaw, IRMI, NILS).
  • Excellent organizational skills, including ability to prioritize and coordinate multiple tasks.
  • Ability to work with and maintain confidential information.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to convey technical issues in a clear, concise and effective manner.

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree, and/or completion of an accredited paralegal program, or equivalent.
  • Typically a minimum of five years of prior paralegal experience in area of responsibility.
  • Prior experience working for P&C or Health carriers preferred.
