Senior Payroll Specialist - Remote
Job Description
Directs the activities of the payroll staff and develops and controls all tasks necessary to accomplish the organization's payroll and compensation processing objectives, including relationships with internal and external auditors and state and federal agencies. Responsible for the payroll accounting and tax liability functions. Provide a leadership role in working with the Payroll staff requiring highly specialized knowledge of the processes, regulations and policies pertaining to the Payroll Department, performing work of a non-routine nature and requiring independent judgment. Perform the most highly specialized clerical duties within unit. Responsible for biweekly and quarterly tax deposits and returns.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Provide a leadership role in working with the Payroll staff, performing work highly specialized in nature. Monitor workflow and serve as liaison between Payroll and management. Research and resolve payroll issues.
- Perform the most highly specialized clerical duties pertaining to the Payroll Department to include but not limited to:
- Act as backup during vacations, absences, etc.
- Recommend procedural changes. Participate in the implementation of procedural and work process changes.
- Resolve day to day problems independently, referring more complex and involved problems to management.
- Train staff; schedule and distribute work assignments, adhering to management's directives.
- Communicate department and management objectives to the department.
- Maintain a thorough knowledge of the regulations and policies affecting the payroll process. Keep abreast of changes and trends.
- Understand and adhere to the Company's risk and regulatory standards, policies and controls in accordance with the Company's Risk Appetite. Identify risk-related issues needing escalation to management.
- Promote an environment that supports diversity and reflects the M&T Bank brand.
- Maintain M&T internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators as applicable.
- Complete other related duties as assigned.
Scope of Responsibilities:
The position is responsible for providing work leadership to payroll staff.
The position performs the most specialized assignments pertaining to the Payroll Department.
Education and Experience Required:
High school diploma or GED
Bachelor's degree preferred
4 years of large company payroll experience required, including payroll tax preparation
Strong knowledge of tax and wage laws
Solid knowledge of personal computers and Microsoft Office
Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to interact with all levels of personnel
Strong mathematical skills
Detail oriented
Education and Experience Preferred:
Payroll software experience a plus
Demonstrated work leadership ability
