MITRE's Sensors, Electromagnetics and EW Department-within the Electronic Systems and Technologies Innovation Center-has an open position for a Senior Principal Chief Engineer for Sensor Technologies. The role will be responsible for increasing our impact by expanding our work program, ensuring quality of our products and deliverables, and developing new technical capabilities. In addition, the Chief Engineer will be responsible for developing and guiding sensor analyses, developing and evaluating advanced sensor designs, sensor prototyping, and developing proposals for new activities and concepts. Candidates must have demonstrated hands-on development experience as well as deep capabilities in analysis, prototyping, and evaluation of sensor technologies and systems. In particular, the Chief Engineer must have a strong background in radar technology development. While the Chief Engineer will have broad responsibilities across the Department and Division, it is expected that this position will be funded primarily through direct program support.

Job Responsibilities

  • Defining strategic direction for developing and maintaining MITRE Labs capabilities to align with a broad range of sponsor's needs.
  • Provide thought leadership and multi-disciplinary skills to develop innovative and transformational solutions that address Sponsor's needs/concerns
  • Fostering innovative, transformational solutions to sensing challenges and capability gaps.
  • Increasing the demand for MITRE's radar/sensor expertise through partnerships with internal stakeholders and sponsors.
  • Ensuring high-quality and impactful solutions and deliverables.
  • Expanding our prototyping and experimentation work program.
  • Developing new capabilities, innovations and applications.
  • Leading proposal development efforts to expand our work program into new areas.
  • Ensuring MITRE Labs' presence in peer reviewed publications, patent submissions and external conferences/workshops.
  • Fostering career growth of staff through mentoring, training, and collaboration.
  • Influence and collaborate with diverse stakeholders to focus resources for internally funded activities.
  • Shape and develop MITRE's sensor capabilities both to increase customer impact and ensure technical rigor
  • Update and execute a division-level strategic plan for sensing capabilities to include mapping capabilities onto prospective new and existing partners
  • Assist managers in recruiting and hiring, e.g., establish hiring requisitions, conduct interviews, make hiring recommendations

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum BS with 15 years or Ph.D. with 10 or more years of sensor engineering experience.
  • Demonstrated broad and deep understanding of radar technologies and methods.
  • Demonstrated experience performing design engineering, test, and field work for radar systems.
  • Respected and viewed as a technical leader.
  • Significant work shaping experience with a focus on quality and impact.
  • Has had substantial sponsor interactions.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate technical concepts simply and concisely, making needed connections, and bridging across domains as appropriate.
  • Demonstrated experience in leveraging resources beyond your home organization.
  • Achieved an increased demand for radar/sensor expertise through partnerships with other organizations.
  • Proven experience fostering career growth of staff through mentoring, training, and collaboration.
  • Solid understanding of sponsor needs and emerging technical opportunities in 2 or more mission areas.
  • Successful experience in developing improved sponsor relationships leading to an expansion of your organizations impact to a mission area.
  • The successful candidate will have excellent organizational and interpersonal skills and be capable of communicating clearly on technical terms, with both the engineering staff as well as senior sponsor leadership.
  • Applicants selected for this position will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or applicants who are eligible for security clearances.
  • Ability to influence and collaborate with diverse stakeholders to focus resources for the MIP and Capstone program.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in electrical engineering, math or physics.
  • Technical depth in RF design, antennas/electromagnetics, or radar EW.
  • Knowledge of non-radar sensing modalities.
  • Top Secret/SCI Clearance.
