Job Description

Today, 60 million Americans work independently, and that trend is only accelerating. But benefits are tightly coupled with full-time, W2-based jobs. As a result, the millions of Americans who work independently are excluded from that financial safety net.

Stride is the world’s first benefits platform built specifically for contractors, part-timers, and the self-employed. We provide them all the same benefits you’d expect from a W2 job, like insurance, tax support, and discounts on products and services. In fact, since launching in 2014, Stride has helped more than 3 million Americans save more than $3 billion.

We’re partnered with the top employers of non-benefited workers, including DoorDash, Uber, Postmates, MasterCard, Amazon, Aon, and Willis Towers Watson. We’re backed with over $96 million in capital by Venrock, New Enterprise Associates, Fidelity’s F-Prime Capital Partners, King River Capital, Mastercard, and Allstate.
And we’re growing!  While we started off exclusively serving non-benefited workers, other companies in our space started knocking on our door to tailor our platform for their customers. Now we need outstanding people (like you!) to help us reach our mission and improve access to affordable benefits for all.

Cash compensation range: $157,000-$181,000 USD annually + equity

About the Role

As a Sr. Product Designer on the Platform Team, you’ll identify opportunities and design experiments to help brokers and consumers find the health benefits that best fit their needs. You will gain a deep understanding of our various users and their jobs to be done so you can design optimal user experiences that empower them through their buying journey when it comes to purchasing and using health benefits.

You will work directly with product engineers, program managers, and stakeholders in a cross-functional fashion, so you can deliver an impactful experience that supports our brokers when they’re shopping and enrolling in health benefits. In this high-impact role, you will:

  • Be the voice in the room that always puts the user first—constantly be looking for ways to balance the user needs with business objectives when designing delightful  experiences while inspiring the Platform Team to go beyond the status quo

  • Oversee the user experience of our shopping and enrollment platform in partnership with product managers, and stakeholders

  • Collaborate with Product and stakeholders to identify opportunities for growth

  • Drive design initiatives from conception to completion – taking ideas from inception to development with multiple iterations that take into account user feedback from usability studies and feedback from your cross-functional team members

  • Drive the product copy and language of all of our products and enrollment flows within the platform. Using accessible language is one of our guiding principles

  • Drive user research for your workstreams, leveraging research to help you frame your designs and obtain qualitative feedback throughout your design process

  • Articulate design solutions through flow charts, prototypes, high-fidelity mocks, technical specifications, and production assets. All of your solutions should aim to simplify the complexity of purchasing benefits

  • Balance a large volume of design initiatives at high velocity and keep your head straight

  • Learn, all the time, every day - and have some fun!

Our ideal designer:
  • Passionate about health and finance, and crafting great consumer experiences

  • Able to learn quickly and recognize on a deep level that everything is changeable and everything can be better (you possess a growth mindset)

  • Unafraid to debate and share your point of view while being receptive to others and being open to feedback yourself

  • Is a master of their craft—specifically interaction and visual design

  • Leverages research to develop hypotheses and inform design decisions

  • Has a start-up mentality - You own your work, you have a bias toward action, and you’re not afraid to fail

  • Demonstrates product thinking; problem-solving, goal setting, and prioritization

  • Can understand our growth and product strategy and be an active contributor in determining a long-term path to achieving a business outcome

  • Inspires and mentors colleagues, sharing processes, skills, and experience to level up the team

  • Believes in the design principle of less, but better

Qualifications
  • Experience designing and shipping applications or software features that encompass an end-to-end experience across a variety of platforms

  • Generalist product designer who loves all aspects of design. Your IxD chops are as good as your visual design chops

  • Strong interaction design skills - defining how an experience should behave based on understanding consumer’s needs, plus consideration of how this innovation will scale

  • Strong visual design skills with proficiency in typography, desktop/mobile UI, color, layout, iconography, aesthetic sense, and how these elements impact product function

  • Strong prototyping skills  to demonstrate how a particular flow or interaction will work

  • Strong storytelling and presentation skills that enable you to articulate a design vision to a broader audience and other leaders.

  • Strong proficiency working with Figma

  • Experience leading product direction and strategic thinking while developing product goals, identifying opportunities, and making decisions based on the user and business impact

  • A portfolio that demonstrates your skills, the impact of your work, and your ability to tell a story

Helpful Information:

This resource will help explain Stride’s Compensation Philosophy and compensation practices, and will answer some common questions you might have.

Stride’s Compensation Philosophy utilizes a National Payscale, which is designed to fairly and equitably pay employees based on their performance and impact regardless of geographic location. For employees in the United States, our National Payscale leverages San Francisco Bay Area market data to determine our compensation bands for cash, commissions, or bonus (if applicable) and equity.

Unless otherwise noted, the cash compensation above is the total salary and does not include a bonus.  In addition to cash compensation, all full-time Striders will be given stock options to participate in Stride’s equity incentive program.  We want all Striders to be an owner of the company, value that ownership, and be able to participate in any future positive outcomes for the company.

Individual compensation packages are based on a few different factors unique to each candidate, including their skills, experience, qualifications, and other job-related reasons. Our compensation ranges are designed to be competitive, equitable, and growth-oriented.

We know that benefits are also an important piece of your total compensation package. To learn more about what’s included in total compensation, check out some of the benefits and perks Stride offers to all US-based employees.

At Stride, we believe in compensating Striders in ways that are true to their value in the marketplace, that inspire and motivate the team to execute our vision, that shape behavior toward productively building and sustaining Stride's culture, and that support the risks and rewards of a fast-growing technology company.

We know the confidence gap and imposter syndrome are a real thing. This can get in the way of meeting incredible candidates, so please don’t hesitate to apply — we’d love to hear from you!
