The Senior Product Development Engineer will be a core member of the hydrogen innovation team responsible for redefining the future of hydrogen. You will be on the forefront of new product development of a differentiated green hydrogen product at AES by participating in all phases of product development, from ideation, R&D, pilot scale validation, scale up and operations.
A successful candidate will have a strong technical background and broad experience developing new technologies, including the design and operation of pilot scale facilities. You are an entrepreneurial and creative, thoughtful individual who thrives in a fast-paced environment full of ambiguity and uncertainty.
Your core responsibility will be to lead operations of two development facilities where AES will develop and validate new innovations: AES' Hydrogen Innovation Hub in Dayton, OH and a commercial de-risking facility in Indianapolis, IN.
As the leader of AES' Hydrogen development facilities, you will be responsible for generating core technical insights and translating those insights into new product features that will be incorporated into our commercial product. Most importantly, you will set an example for how AES will safely operate hydrogen production facilities.
Primary Responsibilities:
Product Development
- Develop new product features for AES' commercial green hydrogen product
- Collaborate with the Innovation Manager to develop and implement AES' Hydrogen Technology product roadmap
- Coordinate the development and execution of testing plans to support the product roadmap
- Collect and analyze operating data to generate core insights that support validation of new product features
- Define technical specifications for validated product features
- Collaborate with broader innovation team to align development and operational goals of testing
Operations:
- Lead Operations at the AES' Hydrogen Development Facilities
- Commission and operate kW scale Electrolyzers, Compressors and Hydrogen Storage vessels
- Develop databases to collect, analyze and store operating data
- Institute and champion standard processes in hydrogen safety by owning site HSE responsibilities
- Develop and lead site operating procedures and protocols, including:
- Safe operating procedures, LOTO, management of change and O&M program
- Environmental reporting requirements
- Document control and inventory management
- Manage the sites operating budget and resource scheduling
Engineering Design and Project Management
- Manage project teams, partners and third-party companies across project development, engineering, and construction
- Update and manage document control/as-builts of typical engineering drawings and lists: PFD, P&ID, SLD, BOM & Equipment lists
- Support periodic project updates and reporting to senior managers through preparation of project status and budget reports.
Qualifications:
- Founder's mentality: A passion for getting things done and a "make it happen" attitude with an intellectual curiosity. You will question assumptions to generate insights and build novel solutions that overcome unexpected challenges.
- Experience: Bachelor of Science in engineering or science with a minimum of 10 years of work experience. At least 3 years of operations experience in a pilot or laboratory setting, including hands-on experience with small bore tubing/valves and mechanical equipment is preferred. Chemical or mechanical engineering backgrounds also preferred.
- Expertise: Deep familiarity with developing and validating new technologies in the hydrogen, chemicals or oil and gas industries. Proven experience in all aspects of pilot scale operations, including facilities that use industrial automation and controls.
- Skill and Behavior: Capability to work dynamically and collaboratively across multiple teams in a technical environment with minimal direction. Excellent communication skills. Results-oriented, "can-do" attitude, and "get things done" mindset; comfortable with uncertainty and ambiguity; no compromise on attention to quality and details.
- Technology proficiency: Demonstrated understanding of the engineering and operation of equipment in typical hydrogen production facilities. Technical understanding of hydrogen electrolyzers, process and power plant control systems, and dispatch algorithms are a plus.
