Mission Summary
Motional is looking for a Senior Program Manager to help the Enterprise Safety department develop and deliver against its portfolio of cross-functional programs and workstreams. In this role, you will work closely with safety leadership to maintain our plans, coordinate with program managers across Motional’s functions to define shared work and dependencies, and be the primary arbiter of resource allocation and status tracking for Safety. You must be able to balance understanding of Motional’s program plans with Safety team priorities – and our department has a profoundly broad scope. This highly cross-functional role requires plan integration and socialization with both (T)PMs and senior leadership across engineering, operations, product, and business functions.
The Motional global headquarters are located at 100 Northern Avenue in Boston, MA. Nestled in the bustling Seaport district with sweeping views of Boston Harbor and downtown Boston, the offices are located close to major transit lines and a quick walk to various restaurants and popular attractions.
What you'll be doing:
- Maintain the integrated schedule and plans for the Enterprise Safety department based on leadership vision, priorities, strategy
- Partner with leaders across Product Management, Program Management, and Engineering functions to document and monitor program requirements and turn these into department work plans with clear cross-team dependencies
- Support the generation and dissemination of of department roadmaps and objectives on a quarterly and ongoing cadence
- Work with safety leadership to ensure proper balance of resource assignments so that our priorities are met but our staff have manageable workloads
- Work with other program managers to collaboratively define and plan cross-functional work streams
- Define and maintain a work breakdown structure and balance agile project management methodologies with overarching company program schedules
- Act as the main source of truth for team resource allocation
- Ensure consistent delivery of critical projects that meet the companies objectives, identifying and removing organizational barriers to execution
- Promote quality communication across departments to effectively execute and report progress, risks, and wins to an executive audience
- Lead and improve planning and execution processes at the intersection of multiple departments
- Develop tooling and process that supports measurement of group efficiency and effectiveness
- Be the point of contact for high visibility multi-functional workstreams by owning communication of team, initiative, and objective statuses to all partners, including senior management and executives
- Build systems to coordinate the proactive identification, tracking, and resolution of risks across multiple organizations.
- Coordinate with product and engineering management to measure progress towards our goals to ensure schedules are met, and wins are celebrated
- Use technical judgment in working with large, cross-engineering teams to track dependencies and risks effectively
- Ensure our team is adhering to a well-executed safety lifecycle
- Ensure our team’s process and schedule are well documented
- Function as the main point person for running the team’s sprints and team-wide meetings
- Identify problems with our product development process and work to implement system-wide improvement
- Coach our team on agile product development best practices
What we're looking for:
- Bachelor’s Degree in engineering, management, business, safety or related field
- Certification in Scrum/Agile Development and/or Project Management
- Familiarity with Jira, Confluence, Smartsheets
- Five (5) years of experience working in program manager capacity
- One (1) years of experience working within operations in a safety-critical field (Aerospace, Automobile, Nuclear, Oil or similar organization)
- Experience in new program development and rollout
- Strong drive to constantly make progress and remove roadblocks for your team
- Excellent communication skills, verbal and written
- Ability to see the high-level picture, and how all components of an interconnected plan and system work together
- Ability to take complex projects, and distill them into clear and actionable plans for individual experts to work against
- Solid experience ushering programs from concept to completion (and beyond), and ensuring teams are aligned, maintain velocity, and meet expectations and goals
- Experience establishing, and conveying clear processes and responsibilities to a wider team
Bonus points (not required):
- Master degree, MBA or 5+ years experience in Management role
- Previous experience in creating analysis for safety, operations or related areas
- Safety / Quality Management System knowledge
- Experience working in the autonomous vehicle, automotive, delivery or transportation industries
- Experience with safety regulatory compliance
- Familiarity with product safety or safety case argumentation
- Experience working with safety data
- Experience with data analysis, dashboarding, metrics reporting and visualization
- Strong understanding of the early and late stage vehicle development processes
- Experience working with high-technology products (i.e. startups, tech companies)
- Experience managing a team of project managers/scrum masters
