Senior Research Scientist
Job Description
Sublime Systems is a technology company commercializing affordable, ultra-low-carbon cement. Sublime's breakthrough replaces the industry's legacy fossil fuel-fired kilns with an electrochemical system that operates at ambient temperature, eliminating the use of fossil fuel and the need for limestone, resulting in low-carbon, low-embodied energy cement. This technology has the potential to drive gigaton-scale CO2 reductions in an industry responsible for 8 percent of global emissions. Sublime is backed by mission-aligned investors, including The Engine, Prime Impact Fund, Energy Impact Partners, and Lowercarbon Capital. We are building a diverse and collaborative team of folks who are "amped about cement" (pun intended), who share our values (excellence, creativity, and teamwork), and our motivation to create a better world.Â
This is an exciting opportunity to transform how the world makes cement. Sublime Systems seeks a Senior Research Scientist to assist with the design and scale of our novel low voltage electrochemical technology. This contributor will be responsible for improving and scaling our electrochemical technologies as well as assisting with operating, monitoring, and evaluating our scaled system. As a member of Sublime Systems’ small but growing team, the Senior Research Scientist will work closely with the company’s leadership and will make a large impact on the technology and business. This is an exciting opportunity to combat global climate change by transforming how the world makes cement. This role will focus on electrochemical design, scaling, validation, and optimization. The position is expected to be hands-on, with a significant amount of time spent engaging in lab testing. The Senior Research Scientist is expected to become an intellectual leader within Sublime’s technical team. The ideal candidate will be independent, results-driven, ambitious, organized, and able to thrive in a fast-paced environment.Â
Responsibilities include:
- Assisting with the design and scale-up of our novel electrochemical system
- Operating and monitoring laboratory and pilot-scale electrochemical systemsÂ
- Devising and implementing strategies to improve electrochemical performanceÂ
- Prioritizing and organizing the team’s research activitiesÂ
- Championing safety, especially in the development of experimental processesÂ
- Contributing to the development of Sublime’s technology through literature reviews and informational interviews with industry expertsÂ
- Writing white papers, reports, and patentsÂ
- Fostering Sublime Systems’ reputation by delivering innovative solutionsÂ
- Helping to develop a supportive, innovative, and dynamic company cultureÂ
Knowledge and Skill Requirements:
- B.S. or M.S. in chemical engineering, electrical engineering, chemistry, or a related field, plus 8 or more years of relevant work experience, OR Ph.D. plus 3 or more years of relevant work experience.Â
- Candidates with industrial experience designing and/or operating pilot scale electrochemical systems are preferred.Â
- Deep knowledge of aqueous electrochemical design including electrical and mechanical design considerations.Â
- Ability to select, design, and/or apply tools and techniques to measure electrochemical performance.Â
- Experience managing up to three employees is preferred.Â
- Superior presentation and communication skills, both written and verbal.Â
- Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to listen, distill information, consult, and suggest new approaches.Â
- Ability to pay close attention to detail, focusing on accuracy and quality, without losing sight of the bigger picture.Â
- Balance, perspective, and a good sense of humor.Â
