As a Senior Scientist on the Chemistry Stability team, you will be trusted to conduct exploratory research to produce new knowledge and potential products; conceives, organizes, promotes, and executes ideas and plans to increase chemistry's role in and contribution to the discovery and chemical approaches to meet exploratory objectives in product discovery at Alcon's Johns Creek, GA location. In this role, a typical day will include:

  • Performs polymer formulation and engineering in a research and development environment with minimum supervision
  • Use relevant statistical techniques and methods to plan and execute experiments and to analyze experimental data.
  • Develop new material for new contact lens and process based on in-depth understanding in polymer chemistry, materials technology, and lens production process.
  • Develop new synthetic methodologies, technique and equipment for lens formulation, fabrication, process, and characterization.
  • Demonstrate an in-depth understanding in structure-property-process relationship of hydrogel materials.
  • Documents experimental results details on all planned and completed experiments including raw materials, experimental plans and procedures, results, data analyses and conclusions in appropriate formats (laboratory notebook, memo and/or report) and communicate effectively to project teams.
  • Handles, uses, stores, and disposes all lab used chemicals as outlined in MSDS, SOP and other company prescribed, state and federal guidelines. Also, complies with all company established Health, Safety and Environment operational requirements. Uses relevant statistical techniques and methods to plan and execute experiments and to analyze experimental data.
  • Actively monitors patent and scientific literature for significant technical developments relevant to CL and CLC products.
  • Protect company IP by filing patent applications

Key Requirements/Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree or Equivalent years of directly related experience (or high school +10 yrs; Assoc.+6 yrs; M.S.+0 yrs).
  • The ability to fluently read, write, understand and communicate in English.
  • 2 Years of Relevant Experience.

Preferred Requirements

  • Background in Polymer Chemistry, Synthetic Organic Chemistry, Chemical Engineering
  • Experience with adhesion chemistry and composite material R&D
  • Knowledge of hydrogel polymeric materials, intraocular lens materials and ocular health products
  • Able to work in a highly diverse environment within our share capability team
  • Experience applying engineering principles to assigned projects is desired (DOE and SPC)
  • Familiarity writing protocols/reports and communicate well to internal customers.
