Senior Scientist

The Senior Scientist is responsible for independently testing of samples and plans and carries out laboratory experiments.  Testing may be conducted for research & development, product release, stability testing, validation, and other purposes.  This includes sample preparation, testing and data analysis according to developing and established procedures in addition to developing and qualifying new test methods.  The Senior Scientist may be subject matter lead for a specific analysis technique or aspect of a larger project, or be the lead on a project.  The Senior Scientist may also perform routine instrument repair and calibration.

Laboratory Experiments/Technical Capability (60%)

• Executes hands-on chemical and device testing.
• Uses software tools for data analysis and performs statistical analysis of data.
• Evaluates experimental results.
• Identified as a subject material expert on one or more instruments and/or techniques.
• Independently plan and execute experiments and develop new laboratory methods.
• Teaches relevant techniques and instrumentation to other personnel

Leadership (10%)

• Serve as a team lead to meet project analytical needs
• Assist with the coordination and of the activities of group Technicians, Associate Scientists and Scientists

Communication (20%)

• Maintains thorough and up-to-date laboratory records.
• Communicate status of projects to manager and project members
• Write project plans and standard operating procedures.
• Complete written reports of findings.
• Provides expert interpretation and opinions for R&D, Commercial Development, and customers

Laboratory (10%)

• Maintains and takes responsibility for laboratory equipment
• Serves as an expert for development and acquisition of laboratory equipment and capabilities
• Assists in efforts to improve laboratory procedures and methods

There may be additional job functions as assigned by the manager based on the individuals skill set and department needs.

• B.S./B.A. degree in Chemistry or related discipline; and 5 to 10 years related relevant experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. A Masters degree preferred.
• Good technical skills/knowledge
• Demonstrated experience with gas chromatography (GC), NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry preferred
