Job Description

About Generate:Biomedicines

Generate:Biomedicines is a new kind of therapeutics company – existing at the intersection of machine learning, biological engineering, and medicine – pioneering Generative Biology™ to create breakthrough medicines where novel therapeutics are computationally generated, instead of being discovered. The Company has built a machine learning-powered biomedicines platform with the potential to generate new drugs across a wide range of biologic modalities. This platform represents a potentially fundamental shift in what is possible in the field of biotherapeutic development.

We pursue this audacious vision because we believe in the unique and revolutionary power of generative biology to radically transform the lives of billions, with an outsized opportunity for patients in need. We are seeking collaborative, relentless problem solvers that share our passion for impact to join us!

Generate:Biomedicines was founded in 2018 by Flagship Pioneering and has received nearly $700 million in funding, providing the resources to rapidly scale the organization. The Company has offices in Somerville and Andover, Massachusetts with over 300 employees.

The Role:

Generate:Biomedicines is seeking a highly creative and driven Sr. Scientist to join the Library and Screening Innovation team in our department of Innovation and Data Generation at Scale (IDGS). This team works at the intersection of synthetic biology (DNA library design and ultra-HTP screening methodologies) and Machine Learning to establish truly novel biological and biochemical workflows for high-throughput data generation. The ideal candidate has a proven track record in experimental synthetic biology, preferably in combination with computational modeling and/or statistical analysis. Top talent will have experience in the design and implementation of high-throughput NGS-based assays, synthetic biology, and biological engineering. The candidate will play a central role in performing world-class technology development to advance our world-class protein design platform and accelerate Generate’s therapeutic development pipeline. Close collaboration with members of Generate’s Protein Sciences, Therapeutic Area Research, and Machine Learning teams will be key to devise strategies to obtain maximally informative, quantitative data from our experiments. This is an opportunity to perform highly innovative technology development with considerable intellectual freedom, while being part of the collaborative and premier scientific environment of a startup at the forefront of generative protein design.

Here's how you will contribute:

  • Design large libraries of protein variants to generate actionable data for machine learning purposes.
  • Develop and implement state-of-the art high-throughput assays interrogating the biophysical and biological properties of proteins.
  • Work closely with the Machine Learning and Computational teams for experimental design and data extraction.
  • Generate bold, creative, and unconventional ideas.
  • Work together with members of IDGS and other departments to help identify opportunities for our uHTP platforms.
  • Present ideas and data, and incorporate feedback, within a cross-functional setting.
  • Support proposed experiments with theoretical analysis, modeling, and literature review.
  • Generate novel intellectual property and contribute to patent writing.

The Ideal Candidate will have:

  • PhD with 4+ years of relevant experimental experience in a relevant  science/engineering field (biophysics, synthetic or systems biology, biomedical engineering, or related discipline) or MSc/BSc with 12+ years of relevant experience.  We are also open to top talent at the Scientist 1 level (PhD/0-2 years of experience) or Scientist II level (PhD/2-4 years of experience).
  • Demonstrated expertise in the design and implementation of synthetic biology and biological  engineering experiments, with particular emphasis on DNA library design and protein library screening.
  • Comfortable analyzing data using custom scripts in MatLab, Python, or similar programming language, with experience with NGS analysis.
  • Have a solid quantitative mindset and a strong scientific intuition.
  • Demonstrated ability to conceive and execute applied biology projects.
  • Self-motivated and curious with a desire to learn from and teach others.
  • Experience with computational modeling and/or experimental automation is seen as a plus.

Who Will Love This Job:

  • A rigorous individual with a curious mind and a love of learning who enjoys working in a fast-paced environment with a driven and collaborative team
