Job Description

Sol Systems is seeking a full-time, full-stack software engineer to help lead the development of our internal business applications as we continue to expand in the renewable energy space.  The ideal candidate would have a proven track record leading software development team in architecting, deploying, and maintaining custom web applications, with technical experience working at all levels of the development stack, from server configuration to user interface development, and the soft skills to support discovery and acceptance conversations with non-technical stakeholders and coach other members of team. This role will report to the Director of Software Development and will support our Environmental Commodities Management division.

Sol Environmental Commodities Management (ECM), is the oldest division at Sol, founded in 2008. The ECM team is an innovative market maker and has helped create multiple state solar renewable energy credit (SREC) markets through the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast.  The ECM team has also raised capital with institutional and individual investors for solar projects and energy credit investing. The team manages multiple environmental commodity portfolios and maintains one of the oldest and largest REC aggregation businesses in the U.S

Key Responsibilities:

  • Working with our PM/BA to perform discovery, groom, and prioritize incoming requests from stakeholders
  • Working with the PM/BA and the software development team to architect solutions that meet stakeholder requirements
  • Implement agreed upon solutions in Ruby on Rails and supporting technologies support the build out of the risk management, trading and asset management frameworks
  • Conduct/support quality assurance activities related to delivered solutions, including writing of unit and integration tests, and supporting stakeholders in UAT
  • Provide technical insight into risks and costs associated with potential projects that the ECM division is considering for their strategic roadmap
  • Work with the leadership and development teams to create and maintain an internal DevOps roadmap to support development efficiency and maintainability

A successful candidate will possess the following skills and attributes: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, IT degree or similar field
  • At least 8 years of post-undergraduate experience
  • At least 5 years recent professional experience working primarily with Ruby on Rails across one or more commercial products in a software development team, including:
    • Extensive understanding of Web Application and System design principles
    • Advanced understanding of SQL or equivalent Active Record/AREL and Database concepts
    • Experience designing and implementing REST APIs
    • Experience integrating with multiple external systems through REST APIs or other
    • Experience across multiple projects or project features
  • Beneficial, but not required:
    • Additional years of experience with other platforms/languages
    • Additional years development in Full stack
    • Additional working knowledge of CSS, JS, HTML
    • Working knowledge of Linux, AWS
  • Passionate about delivering tightly-scoped, high-quality software quickly and efficiently
  • Comfortable working independently to identify, prioritize, and promptly address issues in supported software
  • Comfortable working with and leading a small team in a fast-paced, agile environment
  • Ability to communicate effectively with non-technical users
  • Dedicated to continuous professional improvement
  • Driven to make a difference in an exciting, fast-developing industry
  • Experience working with Enterprise Trading and Risk Management (ETRM) systems would be a plus.
  • Experience integrating with ERP like Salesforce or NetSuite would be a plus.
  • Experience in a trading organization or with Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) and related incentive commodities a plus
  • Experience integrating with third-party SOAP/REST APIs a plus
  • Knowledge of third-party trading applications and external vendor management is beneficial

Location & Hours: This is a full-time hybrid role and will be based in our Washington, DC office that includes a mix of in office and work from home.
