Job Description

Team: IT

This position is posted by Jobgether on behalf of a partner company. We are currently looking for a Senior Software Engineer in the United Kingdom.

This role offers a unique opportunity to work hands-on in modernizing complex, business-critical systems that power global operations. You will collaborate directly with clients, partners, and cross-functional teams to deliver production-ready solutions while shaping how modernization tools and practices evolve. The position emphasizes high-stakes problem-solving, combining strong engineering fundamentals with AI-assisted development. You will operate in an environment that values collaboration, pragmatic solutions, and technical excellence, often working across time zones and occasionally on-site with clients. The role also includes mentoring partners, codifying reusable technical patterns, and contributing to long-term operational reliability. This is a fast-paced, client-facing position where your decisions directly impact real-world business operations and technical outcomes.

Accountabilities:

  • Modernize production mainframe systems in collaboration with customers and partners, ensuring reliability, durability, and long-term operability.
  • Work as part of small, cross-functional XP teams, pairing daily with engineers, product managers, designers, and client teams.
  • Lead and facilitate technical discovery sessions and workshops to understand existing systems, assess risks, and define modernization approaches.
  • Apply engineering best practices such as pair programming, test-driven development, refactoring, and CI/CD.
  • Integrate AI-assisted coding tools into daily workflows, contributing to evolving team best practices for AI use in software development.
  • Design, operate, and maintain production systems with a focus on performance, observability, and partner handoff.
  • Mentor partner engineers, share knowledge, and codify reusable technical and operational patterns.
  • Collaborate flexibly across multiple time zones, supporting partners in the US, India, and UK as needed.
  • Requirements:

    • Extensive experience as a software engineer, ideally in client-facing or delivery-focused roles.
    • Strong fundamentals in software design, test-driven development, CI/CD, and system reliability.
    • Comfortable working with legacy mainframe systems (COBOL, JCL) and modern codebases.
    • Experience in collaborative engineering practices such as pair programming and iterative delivery.
    • Proficiency with AI-assisted coding tools (LLM-based development) and eagerness to help define best practices.
    • Strong communication, facilitation, and problem-solving skills in high-stakes, ambiguous environments.
    • Ability to mentor others, lead technical discussions, and work closely with customers and external partners.
    • Flexibility to travel occasionally for client workshops and work across global time zones.
    • Benefits:

      • Competitive salary and long-term contract engagement.
      • Fully remote work with flexibility to collaborate across time zones.
      • Hands-on, high-impact work on business-critical systems that directly influence operational outcomes.
      • Exposure to AI-assisted development and cutting-edge modernization practices.
      • Professional growth through mentorship, workshops, and leadership in cross-functional teams.
      • Collaborative, inclusive, and supportive environment focused on engineering excellence and pragmatic problem solving.
      • Opportunities for occasional international travel to client sites for hands-on collaboration.
