Senior Software Engineer - Backend, Data Platform

Job Overview:

As a Senior Software Engineer on the Data Platform team you will join the team’s mission of empowering data workers at Coursera and maximizing their productivity by providing robust tools innovative platforms and a steadfast analytics infrastructure. It is an exciting time to join the team as we are actively developing our new data lake systems unifying our data development tool stack and onboarding various functional teams to the new platform.

You will be responsible for designing and developing our data infrastructure as well as tools that pave the path for data development in our data systems. You will have the opportunity to work on complex technical challenges and influence the future roadmap growth and success of Coursera's data-driven culture. You will work closely with a cross functional team of data scientists machine learning  and peers from product engineering data engineering and SRE. You must be comfortable working in a fast-moving team environment (we deploy many times a day!)  Meanwhile as Coursera is bootstrapping our new development center in India this is a unique opportunity to be part of the founding teams and you will play a significant role in shaping the culture for the location.

Responsibilities:

• Design and implement scalable & robust Data Platforms APIs and Systems

• Write and review technical documentation for the components owned by your team

• Develop and deploy your high-quality code (in Java Scala Python or similar languages) following industry best practices and track key service level indicators (SLIs)

• Debug and fix production issues lead blameless retrospectives and participate in the on-call rotation to ensure adherence to the service level agreements (SLAs)

• Collaborate and mentor team members and contribute to teams' success improving processes

Basic Qualifications:

• 5+ years of experience working in a relevant backend software engineering role; 1+ years of experience working with data infrastructure or data systems.

• Proficient in implementing APIs and writing automated tests

• Expertise in cloud data services streaming technologies and handling large data sets

• Prior experience in developing new features and debugging complex issues with minimal supervision

• Fervent belief in engineering quality and building technical leverage for others

• Data-driven and strongly motivated by success and learnings through experiments and metrics analysis

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience working with data systems or data lake. Experience collaborating with data science and data engineering functions.

• Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced and dynamic environment and navigate through ambiguity and uncertainty with confidence.

• Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality products or services.

• Proven track record of delivering results in a resource-constrained environment with limited guidance and supervision.
