Job Description

The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.

About the Role

The New York Times is looking for a senior full stack developer to join the Messaging UI team within the Messaging Platforms group. You’ll contribute to extending the CMS and administrative consoles that allow newsroom editors to create and manage newsletters and push notifications. You’ll be a member of an organization that values empathy, collaboration, transparency, diversity, and learning. You will report to the engineering manager over the UI team and work collaboratively with other engineers, designers, and product managers.

We use React and Redux for much of our front-end development, while our backend code is done using Go. We deploy our services using Drone, and host them in both Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and Amazon Web Services (AWS).

This is a hybrid role based in our New York City headquarters, reporting to the Senior Engineering Manager of Messaging Platform.

The Messaging Platform group is at the heart of messaging at The New York Times. Our mission is to create and maintain multiple messaging platforms and capabilities that deliver the right message at the right time to foster deep connections with people trying to understand the world. This work is important for driving customer acquisition, engagement, and reader loyalty.

We do this by providing data-driven insights, user-friendly tooling, and cutting-edge technology that empowers our editorial and business teams to send highly personalized communications at the speed of breaking news.

What You’ll Do

  • Contribute to the full development lifecycle of our products, performing activities related to design, development, testing, deployment, monitoring, and on-going support of our systems and capabilities.
  • Work within a collaborative, distributed team of engineers, designers, and product managers to design and build user-friendly front-end capabilities.
  • Participate in the effort to modernize and expand our existing front-end tools to support messaging-related workflows for internal newsroom users.
  • Help develop REST APIs inside a Go codebase.
  • Collaborate with other engineering teams across the organization that work on various aspects of the system related to messaging.
  • Maintain code quality through static analysis, unit and system tests.
  • Contribute to our mission of reaching 17+ million subscribers by 2027.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in full stack web application development, including proficiency with back-end languages (Go preferred) and SQL
  • 5+ years of experience with modern frontend web fundamentals (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, TypeScript, web performance, accessibility) and best practices
  • Familiarity with one or more front-end frameworks (React preferred), and familiarity with general patterns and practices related to working with these technologies (Redux, CSS modules, etc)
  • Experience with JS build tooling such as yarn, pnpm, turborepo, lerna, nx, webpack, or babel
  • Experience building, operating, and monitoring web systems in GCP or AWS
  • You have worked with Docker and CI/CD systems such as Drone or Jenkins

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Node.js and GraphQL
  • You have worked with Kubernetes
