Senior Software Engineer - Mobile Networking

About the Role

The Uber mobile networking team is responsible for managing the mobile networking stack and functionalities across all Uber apps, focusing on connectivity, observability, and user experience. As an Android mobile networking engineer, you will collaborate with the most brilliant mobile engineers to enhance user experience, reduce mobile networking latency, and ensure the security and reliability of Uber's mobile applications. As a senior engineer, you will be responsible for driving key innovations and leading other junior engineers, setting technical direction and fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement.

---- What the Candidate Will Do ----

1. Develop, manage, and modernize Uber's Android mobile network stacks to enhance functionality and performance.
2. Tackle complex problems on a global scale, ensuring smooth and efficient network operations.
3. Foster collaborative efforts with key stakeholders to align objectives and optimize results.
4. Coordinate prompt responses to network outages or performance issues to maintain service reliability.
5. Create and implement Android-specific tools for monitoring and improving network observability.

---- Basic Qualifications ----

1. Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.
2. 4+ years of experience in mobile software development, with a significant focus on networking.
3. Strong proficiency in Java and Kotlin.
4. Solid understanding of networking protocols such as HTTP, TCP/IP, and UDP.
5. Demonstrated experience with Android networking frameworks like OkHttp, Retrofit, and Volley.
6. Proven ability to diagnose and tackle performance issues across the networking stack.
7. Strong debugging and troubleshooting skills.
8. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across different teams and effectively lead projects.

---- Preferred Qualifications ----

1. Master's Degree in Computer Science or a related field.
2. 4+ years of professional mobile development experience, with at least 3 years focused on networking.
3. In-depth knowledge of advanced networking concepts, including security (TLS/SSL), WebSocket, QUIC/HTTP3, and mobile network optimization techniques.
4. Experience with real-time data transmission and low latency networking on mobile devices.
5. Proficiency in developing observability tools specific to Android.
6. Leadership experience, particularly in mentoring junior engineers and driving innovation in technology projects.
7. Contributions to open-source projects related to mobile networking.
8. Excellent communication skills, with the ability to articulate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
9. Advanced understanding of cloud systems, including experience with cloud service providers like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud, and how to leverage them for mobile networking solutions.

For San Francisco, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$185,000 per year - USD$205,500 per year.

For Seattle, WA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$185,000 per year - USD$205,500 per year.

For Sunnyvale, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$185,000 per year - USD$205,500 per year.
