Senior Software Engineer, Square Outflows

The Square Banking team helps merchants manage their business finances with products including Square Card, Instant Transfers, Bill Pay, Checking and Savings accounts, advanced reporting, and cash flow insights. With this suite of products, we ensure that our customers get access to the funds they need when they need them and that they can always understand and control where their money is going. We help businesses organize and improve payments to their vendors and suppliers. We partner with platform and infrastructure teams to move billions of dollars each year on behalf of our merchants. We aspire to build a remarkable solution for small businesses to pay bills/invoices and expenses (a.k.a. Accounts payable), and help them manage their cash flow better.
The Outflows team is a product-focused engineering team with a server-side background. Our projects use data-driven decisions to deliver features across mobile and web front-ends. We also talk directly to merchants about their needs and pain to identify opportunities to improve their experience. Our team enjoys working together to contribute to meaningful work seen by millions of merchants worldwide.
You will manage major architectural decisions in our greenfield product, implementing critical functionality, helping guide our technical vision, and scaling backend services for our important matured products.
You will:

• Work with other engineers, designers, and product managers to develop world-class product experiences
• Drive major features, multi-person efforts that usually cross engineering team boundaries
• Manage the architecture of our backend systems
• Manage the delivery of our products, including coordination, planning, risk management, design, development, testing, rollout and maintenance
• Hold yourself, and your teammates accountable to the standards of engineering and ethics that enables Square to safely move billions of dollars in payments and allow our customers to trust us with their sensitive data.
• Help empower a team of engineers by mentoring individuals, encouraging engineering decision-making, and applying your technical expertise to constantly raise the quality of design decisions and implementation by holding the team to a high standard.

Qualifications
You have:

• 8+ years professional experience in software engineering
• 2+ years of professional experience working in at least one of these languages: Java, Kotlin or Ruby
• Demonstrated, first hand experience building products at scale
• The ability to provide technical mentorship and guidance to engineers of varying experience levels
• Strong excellent execution skills with a focus on delivering value and impactful solutions to our diverse community of merchants.
• An appreciation for the connection between the software you build and the experience it delivers to customers
• Experience creating detailed technical documentation and ability to work with other teams, such as designers, product managers, data scientists, marketing, and business development to deliver a great product
