Senior Software Engineering Manager
Job Description
BetterHelp is on a mission to remove the traditional barriers to therapy and make mental health care more accessible to everyone. Founded in 2013, we are now the world's largest online therapy service - providing affordable and convenient therapy in 210 countries and over 60 languages across the globe. Our network of over 30,000 licensed therapists has helped millions of people take ownership of their mental health and change their lives forever. And we're not stopping there - as the unmet need for mental health services continues to grow, BetterHelp is committed to being part of the solution.
As a Senior Software Engineering Manager at BetterHelp, you'll join a diverse team of licensed clinicians, engineers, product pros, creatives, marketers, and business leaders who share a passion for expanding access to therapy. And as a mental health company, we take employee mental health just as seriously as we do our mission. We seriously invest in our team's well-being and professional development, because we know that business and individual growth go hand-in-hand.
At BetterHelp, you'll carve your own path, make an immediate impact, and be challenged every day - with a supportive community behind you the whole way.
What are we looking for?
We're looking for a talented, motivated, smart leader with a passion for software engineering, a strong desire to learn, and an interest in providing mentorship to other developers. This position is ideal for a seasoned software engineering manager who has worked on multiple challenging projects and managed teams of 7+ developers, someone who is not afraid to write code to scratch an itch and can motivate others to build great products with software. We love technology and so should you.
What will you do?
- Lead a 10-15 person team of engineers and accelerate their growth by providing thoughtful feedback, technical mentorship and effectively managing performance.
- Manage the day-to-day activities of your software development team.
- Participate in the hiring process, and onboard new team members.
- Ensure that your team delivers secure, readable and scalable code.
- Collaborate closely with product managers and other teams to deliver the best possible product on reasonable timelines.
- You will be hands-on whenever needed.
- You will own your teams' features and see them through to production and beyond.
- Motivate your team and make sure they have the resources to be successful, both as individuals and as a team.
- You will ship often and fast. We keep an agile environment with continuous deployment.
- You will care and be involved in our product, mission, and success - way beyond checking off tasks.
- You will enjoy great teamwork and lots of fun.
We use a combination of well established and more recent technologies, always innovating, always experimenting. We're open to new ideas and novel approaches! Our current tech stack is:
- Backend: Linux, nginx, MySQL, PHP and Redis
- Frontend: Twig (PHP templates), Bootstrap 3, jQuery, HTML5, CSS3/SASS and React
- You will NOT worry about funding. We have startup DNA, but we're fully backed and funded by our parent company, Teladoc Health.
- You will NOT be confined to your "job". We believe in nurturing employees' interests and passions - even if some of them lie outside of your core responsibilities.
- You will NOT be bogged down by office politics, egos, or bad attitudes. Only positive, pleasure-to-work-with people are allowed here!
- You will NOT get burned out. We work hard, but we also believe in maintaining sustainable work/life balance. Seriously.
- You will NOT have to wonder why you're doing the work you're doing. Our day-to-day operations translate into people getting the help they need.
Can I work remotely?
Yes. We operate in Pacific Time and candidates in any time zone are welcome to apply. We also ask our employees to travel to our Mountain View, CA office every 6-8 weeks to collaborate in person in order to build better working relationships and experience our in-office culture. Travel expenses will be covered and reasonable accommodations will be made for those who cannot travel under unique circumstances.
Requirements
- Must be able to legally work in the US.
- In-depth understanding of web development concepts and principles.
- Proven track of leadership in full-stack projects.
- Ability to design, develop and launch a web application from start to finish.
- Ability to learn quickly and pick up new skills independently.
- Get-things-done attitude with eagerness to build something great.
- 4+ years of experience managing a team of developers.
- 5+ years of experience in web development (any stack), solving challenging problems and implementing new features from scratch.
- 3+ years of experience in SQL. Designing relational DB schemas, complex queries, etc.
- Good knowledge of web & SQL security best practices.
- Comfortable working inside and outside the context of a framework.
- Experience using git in a team environment.
Bonus (Helpful, but not required)
- Experience with the LAMP/LEMP stack
Benefits
- Competitive salary & equity compensation
- Excellent health, dental, and vision coverage
- 401k benefits with employer matching contribution
- Unrivaled perks program (including free therapy, UberEats, and more)
- Remote work with regular in-person bonding experiences sponsored by the company
- Office in the heart of downtown Mountain View, a three-minute walk from Caltrain
- Commuter benefits, FSA accounts, and Employee Stock Purchase Programs
- The chance to build something that changes lives - and that people love
- Any piece of hardware or software that will make you happy and productive
- An awesome community of co-workers
The base salary range for this position is $170,000 - $250,000. In addition to a base salary, this position is eligible for a performance bonus, RSUs, and benefits (subject to eligibility requirements) listed here: Teladoc Health Benefits 2023.
