Job Summary
Physical Sciences Laboratories (PSL) has more than 100 specialized laboratories used to test, analyze, and troubleshoot virtually every aspect of rocket and satellite system design, development, construction, deployment, and operation. The diverse expertise of the laboratories' technical staff allows PSL to stay abreast of new technological developments and program support issues associated with rapidly evolving space systems.
This Space Scientist position within PSL's Space Sciences Department focuses on the modeling and simulation of the radiation environment and its impact on missions and technologies. The role also includes reporting on scientific and application results through direct interactions with customers and corporate leadership, participation in scientific conferences, and through peer-reviewed publications.
This position will be a hybrid work model with remote consideration with some onsite work required in El Segundo, CA or Chantilly, VA as the business needs allow.
What You'll Be Doing
- You will support a wide variety of critical space programs through the application of space science research and the resulting knowledge base and support and grow interactions with a diverse set of customers
- S/he will engage with space acquisition and operations communities to document and understand radiation hazards in operations and use established system assessment methods to advise on material solutions for risk assessments and monitoring
- You will lead and participate in proposals to customer organizations for research funding and collaborate within the Corporation and with external organizations to develop and field innovative techniques for characterizing space environment impacts on space systems
- Conduct scientific research on space radiation to further our understanding of the impacts on space system operations and disseminate results through customer briefings and reports, conferences and workshops, and peer-reviewed publications
- Lead new projects to assess and minimize the risk from space radiation for current and future systems
- Participate in new business development with various customers who drive space radiation requirements and customers who need to accommodate those requirements
What You Need to be Successful
Minimum Requirements:
- PhD degree in a STEM field or equivalent
- Typically, 12 years of experience in the space radiation domain
- Experience running radiation transport codes, radiation shielding assessments, and the application of those fields to complex spaceflight problems
- Experience in conducting applied science research with focus on modeling, experimental techniques, and data exploitation
- Established record of peer-reviewed publications and/or presentations at technical conferences and workshops
- Willingness to occasionally travel and to work off-business hours to support customer needs, approximately 10% (as required)
- This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.
How You Can Stand Out
It would be impressive if you have one or more of these:
- Experience developing new methods for assessing radiation shielding
- Experience in characterizing detailed ionizing radiation instrument responses
- Experience in building multi-organization collaborations and working with contractors and/or program offices
- A current and active TS/SSBI (SCI) security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government, is highly preferred. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.

$117,027 - $192,281 - $267,534
