Senior Staff Configuration & Packaging Engineer - Quantum Computing
Job Description
IonQ is developing the world's most powerful full-stack quantum computer based on trapped-ion technology. We are pushing past the limits of classical physics and current supercomputing technology to unlock a new era of computing. Quantum computing has the potential to impact every area of human society for the better. IonQ’s computers will soon redefine industries like medicine, materials science, finance, artificial intelligence, machine learning, cryptography, and more. IonQ is at the forefront of this technological revolution.
Â
We are looking for a Principal Configuration and Packaging Engineer. As a member of the Engineering Organization, you’ll be part of a cross-functional team whose mission is to lead IonQ on its journey to build the world’s best quantum computers to solve the world’s most complex problems.Â
You will collaborate with a highly interdisciplinary team of atomic physicists, optical engineers, opto-mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, cryosystem engineers, thermal engineers, and program managers to influence, design, and build our upcoming products. You will contribute across the entire product lifecycle from conceptual design through first engineering units. You’ll develop requirements, perform trade studies, and design our current and next generation hardware for our quantum computers.
Responsibilities:Â
- Lead the overall physical integration and packaging of the mechanical, cryogenic, optical, and electrical subsystems within the quantum computer
- Lead cross-functional trade and impact studies on configuration and packaging, and support system requirements development
- Create and manage interface definitions between subsystems with appropriate control documents and ensure that configurations supports major design reviews
- Create and managed the top level product structure and CAD configuration
- Coordinate regular configuration reviews to address module level interfaces, subsystem functionality, assembly and operations
- Ensure manufacturing assembly, test and concept of operations strategies are developed concurrently with the computer design
- Ensure the team adheres to configuration management best practices and IonQ configuration management standards
You’d be a good fit with:Â
- B.S. degree in engineering and at least 10+ years of relevant experience
- Experience with design and packaging of highly integrated systems such as automotive, aircraft/spacecraft, medical or industrial systems
- Demonstrated configuration control experience on recent projects from early trade studies through final design and into manufacturing and production
- Experience with cable management and routed systems
- Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills and experience working in a highly integrated cross-functional team environment
- Strong design and integration skills using 3-D CAD software and visualization tools
- Demonstrated knowledge of scheduling and planning principles and tools
You’d be a great fit with:
- M.S. degree in engineering and at least 15+ years of relevant experience
- Solidworks CAD and PDM experience
- Knowledge and experience with complex optical systems, lasers, cryogenics, and vacuum systems
- Experience with the mechanical design of custom and rack-mounted electronics enclosures
- Experience with shock and vibration isolation methods and techniquesÂ
- Knowledge of trapped-ion quantum computing systems
- Ability to interpret and apply high-level system requirements to practical design solutions
