This position can sit remotely in either the MST or PST time zones; we have offices in those time zones in both San Jose and Draper, UT.Â

The Platform Infrastructure and Database Engineering Team  is responsible for overseeing all of the infrastructure and databases at BILL.  We use DataDog (Logging+Metrics+APM), Splunk, and Cloudwatch (by way of Datadog) to alert with Slack and PagerDuty. We are strong believers in Infrastructure as Code. There are many ways to accomplish this, but we use Terraform and AWS ECS. Â
We are looking for a Senior Staff SRE to join our team. This person has experience navigating DataDog, Splunk, logs, AWS Console, and other facets of observability to triage incidents. They accurately and quickly understand root-cause for incidents. They are an excellent communicator. They will love learning about BILL’s systems, and will come to fully understand how they are interconnected. Once this understanding is achieved, they will use systems-level thinking to understand tradeoffs and propose improvements. They see their peers with compassion, wanting to learn and teach, raising the bar for the entire organization. They establish and engender trust by being careful, listening over talking, and being accurate. They have deep technical acumen. They measure, iterate, and continuously improve. They will work to bridge silos, discovering and sharing information for the good of the company.
We’d love to chat if you have:
- 10+ years of experience in an SRE role
- Successfully managed production environments at scale
- Bachelors and/or Masters or equivalent experience in computer science or related field of study
- Major plus if you are AWS certified as Solutions Architect (Professional)
You have hands-on experience in the following areas:
- Improving observability in an engineering organization
- Networking and routing: VPC, Direct Connect, VPN
- Amazon ECS, ElasticSearch, Redis, and Rabbit MQ
- Terraform in AWS to support global-scale services
You also have the following attributes:
- You’ve managed site-wide outages, learned (and taught!) lessons, and you put safeguards in place to ensure the same incident does not recur
- You are calm and collected, cool under pressure, and not afraid to voice your opinion (even in the heat of an incident)
- You value the growth of your team above doing things yourself – teaching instead of doing
- You have the ability to understand and explain technical issues to a non-technical audience

This role is based in California.
The estimated base salary range for this role is noted below for our office location in San Jose, CA. Additionally, this role is eligible to participate in BILL’s bonus and equity plan. Our ranges for each role and job level are based on a variety of factors including candidate experience, expertise, and geographic location and may vary from the amounts listed above. The role is also eligible for a competitive benefits package that includes: medical, dental, vision, life and disability insurance, 401(k) retirement plan, flexible spending & health savings account, paid holidays, paid time off, and other company benefits.
