Senior Staff Software Engineer - Data Engineering

Reporting to the Director of Data Platform, the Senior Staff Engineer will be responsible for the Marqeta Parser. The Marqeta Parser team is made up of diverse, agile-thinking, and highly-skilled professionals; we use our combined capabilities to enable the organization with innovation, speed, agility, scalability and efficiency. Bringing an innovative, high tech, modern and inspiring approach that helps to align employees with Marqeta’s vision, fun culture and business strategy is essential. 

The team is looking for a Senior Staff Software Engineer to help build out the Marqeta Parser distributed service generating data into Marqeta’s Data Lakehouse.

The successful candidate possesses a good grasp of software engineering skills in Java and other JVM-based technologies. He or she has experience working in a cloud native environment like AWS, GCP, Azure or Oracle Cloud. He or she understands how to build a distributed data processing system using technologies like Hadoop Map-Reduce or Spark in the cloud.

What you'll do

• Help lead the design and implementation of our batch and near real-time system for parsing different data sets and converting them into Parquet and Apache Hudi for ingestion into our Data Lakehouse
• Help with the implementation of our Data Lakehouse using Apache Hudi and/or Apache Iceberg.

What we're looking for

• 10 years in Java.
• Demonstrated ability to navigate a public cloud like AWS, GCP, Azure or Oracle Cloud. In-depth knowledge on a few of the production technologies we use including Docker, Terraform, Kubernetes
• Have used or have the ability to learn distributed programming skills like Spark in a managed distributed environment like AWS EMR. Have used or have the ability to learn how to use row-oriented formats like Avro or column-oriented formats like Parquet.
• Have used or have the ability to learn deploying and programming Kubernetes in a cloud native environment like AWS EKS
• Experience in parsing technology like ANTLR and using Data Lakehouse formats like Apache Hudi, Iceberg, Delta Lake is preferred
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience. Master’s degree is a plus.
• Startup/high growth company experience with a proven track record of thriving in high-performing teams and fast-paced environments.
