Senior Systems Engineer, Functional Safety

Meet the team:

The Functional Safety team ensures the product meets the safety caliber set forth within the company by leveraging existing standards, but also creating novel safety approaches to the cutting edge problem of Level 3 autonomy. Our team is responsible for the entire safety lifecycle during the core development and application of the system into a series-production vehicle. Our team leverages a variety of backgrounds, ranging from robotics, systems engineering, high performance software development, and embedded and industrial software engineering. We collaborate closely with experts in machine learning, prediction/planning, sensor processing, and simulation from across Latitude AI’s product development teams to understand the systems they build, the possible failure modes, and how to detect and respond to those failures.

What you’ll do: 

• Lead functional safety activities across the systems and software organizations on assigned functions to design functional safety into our system from the ground up
• Work closely with engineering teams from concept through implementation to ensure systems, hardware and software functional safety architectures satisfy the functional safety goals 
• Develop requirements from the Functional Safety Requirement (FSR) level down to the Software Safety Requirement (SSR) level
• Perform functional safety analyses on assigned functions (HARA, FMEA, FTA, DFA, STPA)
• Ensure traceability of functional safety requirements across architectures, safety analyses and verification plans
• Develop functional safety verification plans at systems and software level
• Contribute to the preparation and performance of independent safety reviews
• Contribute and support the development of the complete system safety case for our system
• Work with project management to plan and perform functional safety activities

What you'll need to succeed:

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Robotics or a related field and 4+ years of relevant experience (or Master's degree and 2+ years of relevant experience, or PhD)
• 7+ years of relevant industry experience at a minimum
• Strong record working in the field of system safety as it relates to systems/software design and development
• Strong engineering communication skills, especially the ability to communicate complex engineering issues to a diverse team
• Experience with complex compute architecture and development
• Ability to design systems and clearly communicate your designs through documents, diagrams, and presentations.
• Strong ability to quickly understand complex systems and perform systems and software analysis
• Practical experience with systems engineering methods applied to complex software systems, including systematic system or software analysis (e.g. FMEA, FTA, DFA, STPA)
• Knowledge of automotive functional safety standards (ISO-26262 or similar)
• Experience in safety-critical software development processes
• Expertise in safety management and leadership
• Strong systems engineering fundamentals
• Previous demonstrated experience delivering products following the safety lifecycle

Nice to have: 

• Experience applying functional safety concepts to autonomous vehicles and/or high-performance computing a major plus
• Experience with requirements management tools such as Jama
• Experience with modeling tools such as MagicDraw
• Experience with design and architecture documentation, such as UML and SysML
• Experience with AUTOSAR development

The expected base salary range for this full-time position in California is $152,320 - $209,440 USD. Actual starting pay will be based on job-related factors, including exact work location, experience, relevant training and education, and skill level. Latitude employees are also eligible to participate in Latitude’s annual bonus programs, equity compensation, and generous Company benefits program, subject to eligibility requirements.
