Senior Systems Engineer - Traction Motors & Inverters

Job Description Summary

Responsible for integration and support of electric traction motors and inverters in beam axles and drive units. Works within a product system engineering team to integrate the motor with the gearbox, power electronics and other electric components. Closely aligns product design with system requirements to meet customer expectations and design objectives. This associate is involved with regular team discussions to address product risks and development findings. Responsible for carrying product validation through the various stages of development.

Job Description

Responsibilities:

• Technically assess electric machine designs against specifications and system performance requirements

• Propose machine design improvements to optimize performance and improve robustness to production and applications risks.

• Evaluates designs for impact to system constraints and environmental exposure, such as fault conditions, EMI, driveline dynamics or NVH.

• Work with cross-functional engineering groups on system integration design with other components, drive unit assembly processes and application engineering

• Apply best practices to machine designs to ensure key features and lessons learned are considered in designs and contribute to best practices for future designs

• Define validation requirements for new machine designs, including considerations for their use in applications.

• Responsible for planning and execution at all levels of testing: component, EDU/eBeam test cell and vehicle

• Works with component suppliers to ensure proper system integration

Required Skills and Education

Required:

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering required, Advanced degree preferred

• 5+ years of relevant experience with 400V/800V traction motors and inverters

• Working knowledge of ISO26262 functional safety standards and application with traction motor/inverter systems

• Familiar with ASIL ratings

• Experience with motor and inverter validation testing, calibration, faults, thermal and vibration

Preferred:

• Demonstrated experience with motors and inverter system integration into electric drive units in automotive

• Up to date with electric propulsion trends of the market

• Well informed of technology developments in materials, processes, and architectures to consider for product development roadmaps

• Understands various highly integrated electric systems which include electric motors, gearboxes, and inverters
