About the role:

The Samsara Backend Products & Infrastructure engineering team is looking for a Sr. Technical Program Manager (TPM) to join our team and drive our operational excellence and technology programs. In this role, the candidate will manage high-priority, high-profile programs that span across multiple organizations and functions. 

Successful candidates will have a solid track record of program and project management and will have demonstrated excellent leadership, along with exceptional organizational and communication skills in leading teams and programs to deliver successful outcomes. In addition, the right candidate will possess product intuition, and technical understanding to fully integrate with product development teams and contribute at any level of depth. This position will report into the engineering leadership.

In this role, you will:

  • Lead and drive our Operational Excellence program across our engineering teams
  • Deliver cross-functional programs across the Platform & Infrastructure group
  • Identify risks, resolve key program conflicts, and establish appropriate resolution paths
  • Drive programs across multiple internally and with partner teams. This Includes horizontal and vertical types of programs
  • Build and maintain work backlogs, manage engineering dependencies and ensure concise and accurate communications with stakeholders
  • Lead decision making processes - builds consensus, secures commitments, and negotiates positive outcomes
  • Manage reporting and communications across teams, functions and level
  • Communicate program status, risks, issues, and mitigation plans
  • Build trusting relationships with stakeholders, partners, and team members
  • Develop strong partnerships with engineering and product management leaders to drive focus on strategic and tactical program objectives
  • Coach and mentor others in the best practices of modern planning and execution
  • Promote known best practices and train others on existing processes and tools
  • Drive teams and individuals in planning and executing roadmaps, releases, and work backlogs
  • Champion, role model, and embed Samsara’s cultural principles (Focus on Customer Success, Build for the Long Term, Adopt a Growth Mindset, Be Inclusive, Win as a Team) as we scale globally and across new offices

Minimum requirements for the role:

  • 5+ years of full-time technical program management experience in a software engineering organization managing programs at scale, or equivalent experience
  • B.S. degree or equivalent experience, in a technical field

An ideal candidate also has:

  • Proven success on establishing organization-wide processes and communication framework for R&D initiatives
  • 2+ years of hands-on software development experience a plus
  • Direct work experience in a technical project management capacity to drive large technical initiatives including all aspects of process development and execution
  • Knowledge of complex technical ecosystems and adequate technical depth
  • Direct experience working with software engineering leadership, technical teams and individual contributors
  • Ability to quickly adapt to faster pace, shifting priorities, demands, and timelines through analytical and problem-solving capabilities
  • Experience in Agile Methods through multiple teams (Scrum, Kanban)
  • Knowledge of software development lifecycle and processes
  • Ability to manage/juggle competing priorities without loss of efficiency
  • Ability to identify gaps, unblock issues, and drive alignment between groups
