Job Description

Hearst E-commerce is a newly formed organization focused on developing and supporting E-Commerce across Hearst's consumer media portfolio. Our goal is to make it easier to buy all the goods and services our thousands of journalists research every day. We work across a range of focus areas, including building and operating marketplaces, creating performance advertising tools, to helping develop editorial tools to simplify content creation workflows. This breadth helps give our team unique perspectives into the needs of Hearst's reader and viewership across the globe.

As a member of the larger Hearst community, our team is focused on developing a supportive, inclusive culture, and giving back to our communities. Hearst employees have access to extensive training and development opportunities, ranging from robust internship, mentorship, and sponsorship programs to unique opportunities to partner with emerging women-led startups in media, technology and data funded through HearstLab, one of our venture investment groups. Our community support includes the Hearst Foundation, which has overseen more than $1.3 billion in grants to build healthy, productive, and inspiriting opportunities, to our corporate donation matching.

Your Impact

The Hearst E-Commerce team is looking for an experienced UX Designer to lead our UX efforts for experiences built across our net-new performance advertising initiative.

As the Sr. UX Designer for performance advertising, you will have ownership of all relevant customer-facing UX. With that, you will partner and collaborate with product management and engineering to ideate and bring to life new experiences for our customers. In turn, you will be looked at as the subject matter expert for designing delightful and highly functional user experiences that are based on best practices, data, and insights driven through thoughtful user research.

The ideal candidate is a customer-obsessed and curious learner that embraces data-driven UX design and rapid experimentation. Our team will be focused on core experiences that support a wide spectrum of customer types - as such, you should be someone excited about exploring the varying engagement and shopping behaviors across regions, industries, and customer segments. You should have excellent communication skills that span from visual documentation (sketches, user flows, wireframes, functional prototypes, and/or high-fidelity designs) to verbal presentation of complex ideas in easy-to-understand ways. With our many partners across multiple Hearst organizations, you should also have comfort in collaborating and presenting concepts to both junior and senior stakeholders.

This position is open to only Seattle applicants, and the Sr. UX Designer for performance advertising will report to the VP of Product.

If you're interested in a startup environment with an opportunity to define new customer experiences in support of our many / diverse Hearst media brands, then this may be the role for you.

Your Responsibilities

  • Lead the full design process (from collaborative concept ideation through high-fidelity designs intended for engineering implementation).
  • Partner with product management and engineering to identify research opportunities and design the associated studies.
  • Define and own all aspects of user research and studies from research project definition through execution / presentation of findings.
  • Present work to team members and key leadership stakeholders, as well as facilitate feedback and collaboration.
  • Throughout the product lifecycle, proactively assess and recommend improvements to the user experience.
  • Visualize design problems and information in ways that are easy for other team members to comprehend.
  • Think big in an unconstrained way, but also work creatively around technical limitations, as appropriate.
  • Identify and solve large-scale problems with minimal guidance.
  • Advocate for usability, design and innovation within the organization.
  • Stay current on user design best practices and identify opportunities to incorporate into relevant designs.
About You

No two projects are alike, nor are two candidates. The following experiences are common within your peer group, but not strict requirements. We encourage all candidates with some applicable qualifications to apply.
  • 7+ years of design experience
  • An available online portfolio
  • Experience in the e-commerce and/or media space
  • Demonstrated ability to work across multiple organizations and stakeholders (that represent various markets, industries, and customer segments)
  • Experience owning the UX design for a product through the full lifecycle of the project (conceptual design through post-launch improvement and iteration)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to create interactive experiences with prototyping software or by hand
  • Understanding of HTML, Javascript, and CSS that informs design and interaction decisions
For consideration, resumes must be submitted in PDF format with a cover letter and a link to a portfolio of work.
