This position is for a R&D vehicle release update Engineer in Ann Arbor to coordinate all hardware and software release updates necessary to fully update and flash test and certification vehicles to the correct release level.


That includes vehicle diagnostics, trouble shooting and the commissioning of all systems to ensure correct functionality after an update has been completed. Help coordinate and perform the Powertrain and EE Integration validation testing activities after each update sequence and report issues to car lines and to issue coordinators for each functional area.


The candidate for this role will work with technicians and engineers together to support different projects within Mercedes-Benz Research and Development in North America

Job Responsibilities:

  • Key responsibilities of this role are organizing, coordinating, and performing vehicle updates on a technical level utilizing tools such as Monaco and SoftwareTankstelle.
  • Identify required updates, obtaining required hardware and software from counterparts within Mercedes-Benz AG, tracking HW availability timing and delivery timing to assure timely vehicle completion.
  • Generate work orders for local workshops to update hardware and wiring as needed, and coordinate with diagnostic experts and functional teams to perform software updates and ensure intended system functionality.
  • Maintain and update a vehicle and recourse scheduling plan in collaboration with car lines, the certification team and other MBRDNA functional areas to ensure prototypes and test cars are available in time for powertrain and release update deadlines and validation test.
  • For hardware coordination, this role is responsible to keep frequent communication with Mercedes-Benz AG counterparts, mainly in Germany, with confirmation of appropriate hardware levels, part availability, shipping, and delivery status.
  • Actively work on process development and continuous improvement

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (mechanical, computer, computer science, mechatronics, electrical, etc).
  • 3-5 years' experience.
  • Organizational and Leadership Skills: ability to organize people, budget, logistics, data, parts and workshop workflows within MBRDNA, as well as with the customer departments, functional teams, and management in Germany. Ability to lead MBRDNA workshops through advanced troubleshooting procedures.
  • Automotive Development Knowledge: Good understanding of vehicle development process, system development process, liability and quality requirements, knowledge of automobile technology, vehicle electrical and onboard communication architecture, assembly structure, modules and parts. Comprehensive knowledge of vehicle functions.
  • Knowledge of common measurement and diagnostic tools (CANalyzer, CANape, DTS Monaco, Diagmera) and ability to analyze and interpret test and diagnostic data. Knowledge of ECU HW/SW functionality as part of a vehicle system.
  • Analytic or systems engineering knowledge: Ability to learn troubleshooting strategies of complex CAN/LIN/Flexray Star2.x and Star3 vehicle systems in order to identify issues, analyze and determine failure root causes to evaluate and guide solutions and repair actions of test vehicle and prototype vehicle problems.
  • Interpersonal and Team skills: Experience in intercultural environment, German language skills favored to read and understand project requirements and communicate with counterparts in Germany. Must be able to independently build up working relationships with intra-company expert departments in Germany, Austria, and North America in order to address all hardware and software topics.
  • Project Management Skills: Ability to independently generate parallel plans and identify milestones necessary to reach individual and overall project targets.
  • Valid US Driver’s license.
  • Ability to test drive vehicles.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience with Mercedes- Benz vehicles.
  • Familiar with vehicle troubleshooting, Mercedes-Benz AG diagnostic tools, project management.
  • Master's degree with emphasis in Computer, Mechatronics or Electrical Engineering.
