Job Description

At Lilly, we unite caring with discovery to make life better for people around the world. We are a global healthcare leader headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana. Our 35,000 employees around the world work to discover and bring life-changing medicines to those who need them, improve the understanding and management of disease, and give back to our communities through philanthropy and volunteerism. We give our best effort to our work, and we put people first. We're looking for people who are determined to make life better for people around the world.

As a VCD, you will focus on all aspects of a product's development, including design, usability, function, branding, and marketing. Your work touches the entire end-to-end journey of a user's interaction with Lilly's products. It includes identifying new opportunities to help Lilly set the industry standard for user experience by helping people live their lives as unencumbered as possible by their conditions.

We are looking for a highly driven individual that will help to craft a design culture within Lilly and to develop a community of design thinking champions that will be passionate about the user but also has the maturity to find the appropriate balance between the user, technology, and the needs of the business.

The Senior Visual Communications Designer (VCD) will support the VCD team in leading design activities of Design + Human Factors for drug delivery devices and combination products within the Delivery, Device, and Connected Solutions (DDCS) organization.

Your diverse expertise in design will play an essential role in helping the design team to establish and continuously refine processes and tools to enable us to produce outputs of world-class quality and consistency. The role will drive design vision in connection with a multi-disciplinary design team and with multi-functional partners to apply human-centered design methodologies to provide intuitive, aesthetically purposeful, emotionally satisfying, manufacturable drug delivery devices, labeling, and packaging that meet the expectations of users as well as Lilly's brand identity.

Other responsibilities include:

  • Evangelize human-centered design, user experience, and appreciation for the people our company serves.
  • Strengthen and establish new connections inside and outside of the company.
  • Partner, consult, and lead cross-functional teams through ambiguity to consensus, which requires a bias for action.
  • Success requires emotional intelligence, problem-solving skills, situational leadership, and empathy for others in a fast-paced, regulated environment.
  • Lead multiple design efforts with internal and external design resources, from early innovation to late stages of development (commercialization).
  • Advice on all aspects of design, including product development strategy, concept development, design language, device interaction experience, brand development, and plan for manufacturability
  • Quality design solutions are delivered in devices, labeling, and packaging.
  • Design outputs are consistent across Lilly's portfolio and ladder up to support other critical initiatives across the organization.
  • Cultivate a culture of accountability for yourself and others by removing ambiguity and exhibiting a bias for action.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in graphic design, visual communications, UX design or related degree
  • Submit a portfolio (digital PDF or URL) with application submission.

Additional Skills/Preferences

  • Extensive experience with Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Premiere or After Effects (concept, development, and prepress for manufacturing)
  • Deep knowledge and experience working with design principles, design systems, brand guidelines, product, and visual design language.
  • +Experience in healthcare, diagnostics, or pharma is a plus
  • Demonstrate visual, written, and communication skills
  • Ability to apply hands-on skills in brainstorming, storyboarding, concept development, evaluation, and idea refinement
  • Diverse shown experience
  • Experience in marketing, branding, and communications
  • Prior supervisory experience
