Software Engineer

We are looking for a talented Software Engineer to join our software maintenance and operations team in Chicago.

This team looks after a variety of key Mintel systems and products by addressing bugs, regular operational work, and proactive codebase improvements. The systems falling within this team’s remit are largely run from on-premise Linux hosts using Python (Django), Apache HTTP Server, HAProxy, Sentry, svn, and MySQL databases; however, the team also looks after systems utilizing PHP, Perl, PostgreSQL, Elasticsearch, Solr, git, and more. 

You will ideally have a minimum of 2-3 years of professional experience in software development, a strong dedication to paying down technical debt, and comfort with communicating with non-technical stakeholders.

What you will be doing:

• Join a diverse, high-functioning agile team
• Taking full ownership of software development cases and writing correct, robust, and understandable code, while also assessing and validating requirements
• Context-switching when needed to address reactive work such as issues, alerts, outages
• Participating in code reviews and pair programming, providing code quality suggestions to help maintain the structure and quality of the codebase
• Manage the deployment of new features to beta and live environments
• Help us to build architectural improvement plans and establish prioritized technical backlogs, in conjunction with our department technical strategy, so our systems become more reliable and remain well supported
• Diagnose complex issues and fix bugs, helping our team to understand root causes and broader mitigations possible
• Participate in testing and other quality assurance activities

Bonus Points For:

• Experience with High Availability concepts (load balanced vs primary-backup architectures, MySQL replication, front-end proxies, CDNs)
• Experience with monitoring and reporting tools such as Prometheus, Grafana,  Alertra, OpsGenie, Sentry
• Familiarity with containerization, namely Docker
