About the Team

The Data Platform and Observability team is based in Pleasanton, CA; Boston, MA; Atlanta, GA and Dublin, Ireland. We enable real time insights across Workday's - The Data Platform and Observability team is based in Pleasanton, CA; Boston, MA; Atlanta, GA and Dublin, Ireland. We enable real time insights across Workday's platforms, infrastructure and applications. Our focus is on the development of a large scale distributed data platform to support critical Workday applications.

The team provides software for collection, ingestion, storage & visualization of critical data assets. We handle 100s of terabytes of data in the form of billions of messages produced daily by Workday applications and underlying services. About the Role

You will prototype, optimize, and maintain scalable back-end services that will power Workday's observability Platform. Design extensible and testable interfaces between internal services including the underlying storage, distributed systems and data models. Be responsible for the architecture, design, development, and operations of large-scale distributed systems designed for Workday observability platform including data management systems, data engineering workflow systems, distributed compute systems and connect to the front-end components. Work with internal partners to understand their product use case, desired capabilities, and scale requirements and translate that to engineering specifications and code. Be an engaged teammate in a customer-focused multi-functional environment where you will feel excited to take on whatever is most impactful for the company and products.

Basic Qualifications - Software Engineer - Backend (Distributed Systems)

• 3-5+ years of professional software engineering experience
• 3-5 years programming and scripting languages like Java, Go, Python, Ruby
• 3+ years applying Infrastructure as Code tools like Terraform and Automation/Config management tools such as Chef, Ansible.
• 3+ years experience in delivering distributed systems and services in a production setting for cloud-native applications
• Experience in a public cloud environment (AWS/GCP)
• Kubernetes/container orchestration frameworks experience (EKS)
• CI/CD - Argo, Jenkins, Tekton etc
• Experience with Distributed Data systems (Elasticsearch, Hadoop, Kafka, Mimir, Grafana, Prometheus etc) & Query engines (Hive, Spark etc), including client development and server internals
• Experience with architecting and developing production web-scale systems (monitoring, telemetry, performance, reliability, triage and debug)
• Understanding of Time series data, monitoring systems, dashboarding with Grafana, Prometheus
• Bachelor's Degree or higher, Computer Science/Engineering or equivalent

Other Qualifications

• Extensive experience with multi-threaded code development and algorithms for large-scale distributed system reliability.
• Extensive experience in build, testing, integration and deployment.
• Systems and networking experience to help with Debugging.
• Strong organizational skills facilitating complex software development, cross team coordination, handling dependencies and helping with tough prioritization decisions.
• Experience developing enterprise software products for the observability platform
• Experience with distributed compute frameworks and/or deep learning frameworks
• Experience building and maintaining large scale, distributed and high performance data pipelines
• Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
