About the team
This team seeks to create the next-generation software solutions for data visualization for editorial, research, and product groups to aid in the production and integration of immersive data-driven experiences. Currently, the team's key initiative is developing a no-code data visualization creation platform that will allow many of Morningstar's internal teams to build engaging and interactive charts and tables to display Morningstar data while enriching our online content.

Morningstar is looking for a Software Engineer who has a love for constructing elegant interfaces, and creating thoughtful tools, frameworks, and libraries. If you have a desire to dive deep and connect with data, technology, brand and design system standards, and your teammates to advance the delivery of data visualization and other visual elements and standards this role is for you.
This position may be located in our Chicago, New York, Toronto, or London office; we will also consider candidates working remotely in the United States where Morningstar is registered to conduct business.
In this role, you will:
- Contribute and collaborate with the design system team towards the development of Morningstar's charts and data visualization tools.
- Author technical documentation for every facet of the product ecosystem in collaboration with your engineering and design partners.
- Work in a cross-disciplinary environment and interact with brand representatives, design system team, designers, content creators, and engineers throughout the company.
- Use creative facilitation techniques during internal client meetings to understand the problem space and foster a shared vision of the future.
- Communicate engineering solutions to guide and persuade internal users through prototypes, detailed specifications, and presentations.
- Take accountability for your code through all phases of development from requirements and design through release.
Qualifications:
- You have 3+ years of experience working as a software engineer.
- You have strong JavaScript knowledge, including concepts like composition, modular reusable code, event management, etc.
- You have written HTML and CSS, and understand concepts relating to the Document Object Model (DOM), browser APIs, legacy browser support, and accessibility.
- Familiar with libraries such as D3 and have started to understand its patterns, functionality, and APIs.
- You have used Unit Testing, Visual Regression, or other methods of testing to protect the integrity of the visual design, and quality of your code.
- When writing code, you consider scalability, performance, and readability.
- You have an empathetic approach when evaluating users' needs and take a systematic approach to evolving the system to meet those needs.
- You seek to curate inclusive and accessible experiences following WCAG standards.
- You can receive and provide constructive feedback through a robust code review process.
- You understand how tools like Webpack, Yarn and Storybook, concepts like server-side rendering, and infrastructure like Jenkins and AWS can all be used together to maintain and deliver a complete product experience.
