Job Description

The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.

About the Role

The New York Times is looking for a Software Engineer to join the Platform Web Squad within the Games team. You’ll join a team of engineers, designers, and product managers working to create incredible, immersive gaming experiences across The New York Time’s suite of unique games, with a focus on the core components, patterns, architecture, and frameworks that enable our products. You will report to the Sr. Engineering Manager, Games Platform and will be part of an engineering organization that values transparency and openness, diversity, learning, community, and continuous improvement.

Your work will include development of the next generation of software products to expand and strengthen the tech behind our Games, enabling teams to work more quickly and deliver new features at unprecedented scale.

We generally build APIs in Go, web applications in Node.js, and front-ends in React with accessible, semantic HTML and SCSS. We’re hosted almost entirely on Google Cloud Platform and will eventually move to AWS.

This is a hybrid role based in our New York City headquarters.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of full-time software engineering experience building features in large-scale distributed systems

  • 2+ years of experience with modern frontend web fundamentals (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, web performance, accessibility) and best practices

  • Familiarity with one or more frontend frameworks (React, Angular, Vue), and familiarity with general patterns and practices related to working with these technologies (Redux, CSS modules, etc)

  • Experience partnering with other engineers and cross-functional partners to deliver high-quality work

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to embrace challenges, learn from mistakes, and share learnings with others

  • Experience developing reusable and modular component libraries that can be leveraged across a codebase
