Job Description

The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.

Mission and Responsibilities:

The New York Times is looking for a Software Engineer to join our GraphQL Platform team. As the GraphQL team, we delight in building and operating a high-throughput graph-based API platform that serves NY Times digital products from News, to Cooking, Games, Audio, and more!

Our team is modernizing our platform to bring GraphQL federation to the enterprise with a suite of complimentary services that achieve that end. We use industry-leading products from Apollo GraphQL, build those services with modern languages and host them in Google Cloud Platform and Amazon Web Services.

We are team-oriented, and everything we do is at scale. If you like being at the center of all of the action and idea that the impact of the work you do can be measured in the tens of billions of requests, then this is the team for you!

This is a hybrid role based in our New York City office, reporting to the Senior Engineering Manager for GraphQL Platform.

Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the full development lifecycle: design, development, testing, deployment, monitoring, and support of services and capabilities.

  • Author unit tests, integration tests and user documentation.

  • Assist other teams to onboard to the GraphQL platform.

  • Team-up and learn through pairing, design reviews, and code reviews.

  • Collaborate with Product Management and other professionals across the organization.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 2+ years experience building large-scale software applications with NodeJS, Go, or the JVM.

  • Experience building and operating observable backend systems and APIs.

  • Hands-on experience with an enterprise GraphQL framework (Apollo, DGS, Sangria, gqlgen, etc.).

  • Unit/Integration testing experience.

Other Qualifications:

  • Experience with GraphQL federation in Apollo Gateway or Apollo Router.

  • Interest/experience with programming production services in Go.

  • Successful application of collaborative practices, such as pairing.

We ask that you serve limited on-call hours. An on-call schedule will be determined when you join, taking into account team size and other variables.
