Software Engineer I / Software Engineer II - Digital Models of Cognition
Join a fast-paced team of engineers creating cutting edge software products for the US Air Force. You will work alongside Ball Aerospace and US Air Force developers and engineers to provide technologies that increase the capabilities of our nation's military. Our team's goal is to develop digital models of cognition and the physical environment to support warfighter success. Our unique customers give you the opportunity for interesting and meaningful work. Our technologies have been used DOD wide as well as by civilian government and commercial organizations.
Our small team allows us to be quick and efficient while giving you the chance to grow. You will be involved in the entire development process; conceiving solutions, designing user interfaces, implementing architectures, programming applications and testing code. There is a significant opportunity for you to develop novel solutions to problems; many of our team members own design and software patents. We encourage our team to be constant learners; staying current on industry best practices, and thinking outside the box.
What You'll Do:
  • Assist scientists and engineers to create and integrate multiple digital models of physical environments, human perceptual and physiological processes, and human cognition, performance, and behavior.
  • Consult regularly with customers and end users to prioritize their frontend needs and wants.
  • Consult regularly with scientists and engineers on researching, selecting, validating, and backend implementing models at all levels of abstraction into integrated software products.
  • Actively participate in the decision-making process of the team ensuring that user requirements and modeling research efforts align.
  • Participate in iteration planning meetings ensuring that the team has a common understanding of each story and tasks in a team's backlog.
  • Establish test-driven verification, continuous integration, continuous delivery, and continuous deployment pipelines and practices.
  • Architect and organize Git repositories and code bases.
  • Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, the Strategic Business Units, the Strategic Support Units, and the company. Interact appropriately with others in order to maintain a positive and productive work environment.
  • Perform other duties as necessary.

What You'll Need:
  • Software Engineer I - BS degree or higher in Engineering or a related technical field is required plus 2 or more years related experience.
  • Software Engineer II - BS degree or higher in Engineering or a related technical field is required plus 5 or more years related experience.
  • Each higher-level related degree, i.e., Master's Degree or Ph.D., may substitute for two years of related experience. Related technical experience may be considered in lieu of education. Degree must be from a university, college, or school which is accredited by an agency recognized by the US Secretary of Education, US Department of Education.
  • Excellent understanding of computer science concepts, object-oriented design principles.
  • Experience developing software in different programming languages, and demonstrated ability to quickly learn new languages, including but not limited to C#, Python, SysML, SQL databasing.
  • 2 or more years of software development experience in a production environment.

On-Site Work Environment: This position requires regular in-person engagement by working on-site three or more days each normally scheduled week in the primary work location. Travel and local commute between Ball campuses and other possible non-Ball locations may be required.
Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed in an office, laboratory, production floor, or cleanroom, outdoors or remote research environment.
  • May occasionally work in production work centers where use of protective equipment and gear is required.
  • May access other facilities in various weather conditions.

A current DoD clearance and/or SCI access with Polygraph is not required to be eligible for this position, however applicant must be willing and eligible for submission within 60-90 days after an offer is accepted and must be able to maintain the applicable clearance/access. Compensation & Benefits:
  • HIRING SALARY RANGE FOR SOFTWARE ENGINEER I: $88,500 - $109,500 (Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data.)
  • HIRING SALARY RANGE FOR SOFTWARE ENGINEER II: $108,000 - $133,500 (Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data.)
