Job Description
Software Engineer Job Responsibilities:
Delivers IT solutions by designing, configuring, developing, installing and maintaining commercial off-the-shelf and/or custom developed applications.
Software Engineer Job Duties:
- Determines operational feasibility by evaluating analysis, problem definition, requirements, solution development, and proposed solutions.
- Documents and demonstrates solutions by developing documentation, flowcharts, layouts, diagrams, charts, code comments and clear code.
- Prepares and installs solutions by determining and designing system specifications, standards, and programming.
- Improves operations by conducting systems analysis; recommending changes in policies and procedures.
- Obtains and licenses software by obtaining required information from vendors; recommending purchases; testing and approving products.
- Updates job knowledge by studying state-of-the-art development tools, programming techniques, and computing equipment; participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations.
- Protects operations by keeping information confidential.
- Provides information by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing development and service issues.
- Accomplishes engineering and organization mission by completing related results as needed.
- Develops software solutions by studying information needs; conferring with users; studying systems flow, data usage, and work processes; investigating problem areas; following the software development lifecycle.
- May perform as a technical or functional lead in modifying or configuring software projects
- Collaborates and adds value through participation in peer code reviews, providing comments and suggestions
- Provides reliable solutions to a variety of problems using sound problem solving techniques
- Performs technical root cause analysis and outlines corrective action for given problems
- Perform other duties as necessary

Software Engineer I (Junior)
Designs, modifies, develops, writes and implements software applications. Supports and/or installs software applications and/or operating systems. Participates in the testing process through test review and analysis. Requires a bachelor's degree (or equivalent experience) and 0-2 years of related experience. Has knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field or application. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Works under immediate supervision. Primary job functions do not typically require exercising independent judgment. Typically reports to a senior engineer for work direction.
Software Engineer II (Intermediate)
Designs, modifies, develops, writes and implements software programming applications. Supports and/or installs software applications/operating systems. Participates in the testing process through test review and analysis, test witnessing and certification of software. Requires a bachelor's degree in a related area and 2-5 years of related experienceFamiliar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Relies on limited experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of tasks. Works under general supervision; typically reports to a senior engineer for work direction. A certain degree of creativity and latitude is required.
Software Engineer III (Senior)
Designs, modifies, develops, writes and implements software programming applications. Supports and/or installs software applications/operating systems. Participates in the testing process through test review and analysis, test witnessing and certification of software. Requires a bachelor's degree in a related area and 5 + years of related experience. Familiar with a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of complicated tasks. May lead and direct the work of others. A large degree of creativity, problem solving skills and latitude is expected. Typically reports to a Principle Engineer for work direction.
Software Engineer IV (Principle)
A recognized technical leader within the Software Engineering team. Designs, modifies, develops, writes and implements software applications. Participates in the testing process through test review and analysis, test witnessing and certification of software. Requires a bachelor's degree in a related area and 10+ years of experience in related field . Expert in standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Relies on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals individually and through other team members. Performs a variety of tasks including taking responsibility for assigning development tasks to other software engineers and reviewing their work product. Mentors less experienced developers to promote adoption of best practices and quality processes. Collaborates with peers, other IT staff, functional business staff and customers to resolve issues and deliver solutions. Takes ownership of respective area and delivers high quality & professional work product. Solid problem solving skills, creativity and professional judgment are expected. Typically reports to an SE Manager, Director or VP for work direction depending on assignments.
