Software Engineer III - Backend

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join the MyFitnessPal Backend Engineering team. Our users rely on MyFitnessPal to power their health and fitness journeys every day. About the team:

The Engineering Initiatives Team is an engineering led team focused on improving our ability to extend and maintain our software systems.  We strive to improve the quality and reliability of our systems through technical improvements.  We operate as a software platform team seeking to understand what parts of our client and server applications prevent us from solving problems for our users.

About the role:

This role is considered our “career” level Senior Software Engineer. Individuals in this role are trusted to break down abstract problems and implement solutions. Often this role will lead larger efforts with the appropriate collaboration with peers and superiors. This role spends the bulk of their time contributing code and ideas to solve complex technical problems.

While the majority of the work you will do will be in Kotlin we also have Scala Ruby Java Go Node and Python throughout the stack. We care more about your general engineering skill than your knowledge of a specific language and or framework.

What you’ll be doing:

• Working collaboratively with cross functional peers to solve the right problems as a team

• Build relationships with your peers across other teams to understand and prioritize widespread challenges in the MyFitnessPal ecosystem

• Break down problems into small deliverable solutions collaboratively

• Develop and maintain APIs that drive our user's experience integrating with services and systems across the MyFitnessPal engineering teams

• Evaluate and improve existing systems and APIs to provide more robust solutions that allow others to move quickly and efficiently

• Support resolution of production issues across the entire MyFitnessPal stack.

Qualifications to be successful in this role:

• 4-6 years of relevant experience

• Have built high request volume APIs for a multitude of clients including but not limited to: Mobile Web Third-Party integrators

• Supported client teams through migrations efforts involving large-scale API changes

• Experience with a variety of API design patterns such as REST & GraphQL

• Experience with a variety of data stores (e.g. MySQL MongoDB DynamoDB Redis)

• Profiling and performance tuning applications

• Experience with high volume messaging queues such as Kafka

• Familiarity with AWS and/or other cloud computing platforms

Bonus Points:

• Exposure to XP Pair Programming Mob Programming or other highly collaborative working styles

• Experience with Test Driven Development (TDD) Behavior Driven Development (BDD) or other practices focussed on building self verifying code

• Have contributed code to iOS Android or Web applications

• Experience re-platforming high volume high criticality systems

The reasonably estimated salary for this role at MyFitnessPal ranges from $100000 - $150000 . Actual compensation is based on factors such as the candidate’s skills qualifications and experience.
