Software Engineer - Java PL/SQL

About the Role:

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior SQL Developer with a strong background in either PL/SQL/T-SQL to join our team. You will play a critical role in maintaining, enhancing, and optimizing our extensive existing database codebase. While our primary database environment is Sybase ASE using T-SQL, we recognize and value the transferable skills of experienced PL/SQL developers. This role will focus primarily on understanding, modifying, and improving our current T-SQL code. You will be responsible for implementing bug fixes, performance tuning, adding new features to existing systems, and ensuring the continued stability and integrity of our critical database applications.

Responsibilities:

Code Maintenance and Enhancement: Analyze, modify, and enhance existing code (stored procedures, functions, triggers) to meet evolving business requirements and address issues.

Performance Optimization: Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks within the existing codebase. Optimize queries, stored procedures, and database design for maximum efficiency.

Troubleshooting and Debugging: Diagnose and resolve complex database issues in development, test, and production environments.

Refactoring: Proactively identify areas of the codebase that can be improved through refactoring, leading to increased maintainability and efficiency, and implementing said refactoring.

Code Reviews: Participate in code reviews to ensure code quality, adherence to coding standards, and best practices.

Documentation: Maintain and update technical documentation related to the database schema, code logic, and system functionality.

Collaboration: Work effectively with other developers, business analysts, and stakeholders to understand requirements and implement solutions within the existing codebase.

Mentorship: Provide guidance to junior developers, sharing your knowledge and experience.

Stay abreast of database development best practices and propose improvements to our current processes.

Qualifications:

Experience: 5-8 years of professional experience in database development using either T-SQL or PL/SQL.

Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.

Technical Skills:

Strong proficiency in either T-SQL or PL/SQL: You should be highly skilled in writing complex queries, stored procedures, functions, triggers, and using advanced features of your chosen language.

Proven experience working with large, complex existing codebases: Demonstrated ability to understand, modify, and improve existing code rather than solely focusing on new development.

Solid understanding of database design principles and normalization.

Experience with performance tuning and optimization techniques.

Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git, SVN).

Exposure to Sybase ASE is a plus, but not required for candidates with strong PL/SQL background.

Experience with database security best practices.
