Job Description

About Us:

We're on a mission to make it possible for every person, team, and company to be able to tailor their software to solve any problem and take on any challenge. Computers may be our most powerful tools, but most of us can't build or modify the software we use on them every day. At Notion, we want to change this with focus, design, and craft.

We've been working on this together since 2016, and have customers like Pixar, Mitsubishi, Figma, Plaid, Match Group, and thousands more on this journey with us. Today, we're growing fast and excited for new teammates to join us who are the best at what they do. We're passionate about building a company as diverse and creative as the millions of people Notion reaches worldwide.

Notion is an in person company, and currently requires its employees to come to the office for two Anchor Days (Mondays & Thursdays) and requests that employees spend the majority of their week in the office (including a third day).

About The Role

We believe that recent advances in machine learning and artificial intelligence will fundamentally reshape how people use tools, and we’re looking for people who have experience in building AI-powered products to help us in forging this path. Notion’s product can be enhanced by machine learning—search ranking and relevance, assisted document composition, “smart” notifications, and abuse detection are just a few of the examples.

In this role, you’ll be responsible for end-to-end development of machine learning products—this includes building the data and machine learning infrastructure for model training and serving, training and tuning models, and working on the products that rely on those models.

What You'll Achieve:
  • Depending on your interests and experience, you’ll work on fundamental infrastructure for machine learning, model training and development, ML product development, or—ideally—all of these.
    • You’ll build machine learning infrastructure to enable you, your teammates, and your colleagues to train and deploy models quickly and reliably,
    • You’ll develop the right models for various product use cases, and
    • You’ll build the products that rely on those models, thinking carefully about the modeling and product interactions.
  • You’ll work with Product, Design and engineering peers to craft our overall AI product roadmap.
  • You’ll help develop our long-term technical roadmap for machine learning and artificial intelligence so we can execute on that AI product strategy.
Skills You'll Need to Bring:
  • You have 7+ years of engineering experience -- ideally with the last several years focused on building machine learning-powered products and/or developing machine learning infrastructure.
  • You are familiar with the fundamentals of machine learning and artificial intelligence: model types and how they’re used (everything from classical models like boosted trees to transformers and large language models). You have experience training and fine-tuning models.
  • You have a track record for shipping scalable and reliable user-facing products or infrastructure.
  • You thrive when collaborating cross-functionally—especially with product, design, infrastructure and data teams
  • You have a computer science background or equivalent technical experience
Nice to Haves:
  • You have stayed (and continue to stay) abreast of recent advances in artificial intelligence and machine learning.
  • You have a Masters or Ph.D. in machine learning, artificial intelligence, or a related field.
  • You have experience with large scale data processing technologies (e.g. Spark, Flink, Kafka, Airflow, YARN/Hadoop)
  • You have worked at a fast-growing start-up or a SaaS company, or you’re eager to contribute in such an environment (being a current Notion user would be great!)
  • You've heard of computing pioneers like Ada Lovelace, Douglas Engelbart, Alan Kay, and others—and understand why we're big fans of their work.

Our customers come from all walks of life and so do we. We hire great people from a wide variety of backgrounds, not just because it's the right thing to do, but because it makes our company stronger. If you share our values and our enthusiasm for small businesses, you will find a home at Notion.
