About the Team:
The New York Times is seeking a full stack Software Engineer to join the NYT Cooking team. NYT Cooking helps you discover and cook the world’s best recipes. The NYT Cooking team is tight knit and interdisciplinary — we collaborate with our design, data, product, and editorial partners to prototype, develop and scale new features for both our responsive website and mobile apps. We are made up of small, focused groups tasked with building great cooking experiences on a variety of devices and platforms, including web, iOS and Android. You will report to the Engineering Manager of Cooking's Audience team.
Our tech stack: JavaScript (React, TypeScript, Next.js), Ruby (Rails), PostgreSQL, GraphQL.
What You'll Do:
As a member of the NYT Cooking team, your day-to-day job would include the following activities:
- You will join Cooking’s Audience team – a team focused on increasing Cooking’s reach.
- You will collaborate with Product, SEO, Design, and other engineers across The New York Times to enhance Cooking’s web user experience and improve our SEO while maintaining standards of performance and reliability.
- You will partner with leads to plan and estimate work. You enjoy collaborating with teammates and finding creative technical solutions, appreciating the balance between conviction and flexibility. You have your strengths but you enjoy new challenges.
- You will contribute to our design system and other aspects of Cooking’s engineering culture.
Basic Qualifications:
- 2+ years experience building and maintaining modern web applications.
- An understanding of SEO best practices and web performance.
- Experience troubleshooting systems using tools such as DataDog, Sentry or similar.
- Experience collaborating with cross-functional partners.
- Experience independently finding solutions and knowing when to seek assistance to make progress.
- Familiarity with AWS, GCP or other cloud provider products and services.
- Familiarity with Docker or similar containerization service.
This role may require limited on-call hours. An on-call schedule will be determined when you join, taking into account team size and other variables.

The annual base pay range for this role is between:
$104,000—$130,000 USD
