The core Duo platform is responsible for more than 1 billion authentications per month and has a target SLA of 99.99%. Platform Core's primary responsibility is to innovate new ways to scale and increase the availability of this platform. We build resilient and scalable systems which can be used as building blocks in the main security and authentication platform by other engineering teams. We help set best practices and standards for the rest of the organization and leverage the high degree of experience on our team to educate other developers.
Examples of our work include building a fully secure event messaging system which the entire organization depends on to perform asynchronous communication between all of Duo's microservices. We've also set RESTful API standards for the rest of the organization by building tools that make it easy for other engineers to write clean, secure and scalable code.
The Platform Core team is looking for an engineer to help strengthen the automation, observability, and operationalization we build into our solutions. You might have previous experience in SRE and/or DevOps work. You should have a mindset that leans into automation and finds joy in making systems more resilient and maintainable. This is not a traditional SRE role which fields day-to-day configuration changes and production support. Together with the team, you will leverage your past experience to increase the robustness of the systems our team builds to allow for responsible hand-off to our SRE partner-organization who will own day-to-day production support. You, as a member of Platform Core, will be focused on net new inventions and updates that significantly move the needle forward for the organization by developing new solutions to challenging problems as well as helping to improve the automation of existing systems.

Skills you have....
- You have 4+ years of professional software engineering experience building solutions for a highly-available SaaS environment. If some of this was in SRE-like and/or DevOps-like work, that's a bonus.
- Experience crafting solutions with Python (or are able to learn it) and using tools like Kafka/MSK, Kubernetes, AWS, Docker, MySQL, ElasticSearch, Grafana/Kibana/DataDog
- Sharp focus and planning for work on or beyond a full quarter-time horizon
- History of writing performant, maintainable, testable code, a commitment to modern software testing practices, and a passion for automation and reducing operational overhead
- Superior communication to describe, analyze, and convince others about major technical tradeoffs and decisions, obtaining consensus on solutions
- Shown experience working across teams and with other engineering leaders to spec out high-level designs for platform improvements
- A desire to make the lives of your fellow engineers easier through continuous improvement in developer experience when using our services.
- Persuasive abilities to motivate and empower your team members to achieve a higher level of performance
- A curious nature and dedication for gathering information and resources for your team

- Automated configuration experience with tools such as Terraform, Ansible, Puppet & Chef
- Cloud services deployment, monitoring, alerting, and issue escalations experience
