Software Engineer - Publication & Visualization

The Research Information and Digital Solutions organization (Research IDS) delivers innovative technical and analytical solutions to aid, accelerate, and support work done across the Lilly Research Laboratories and beyond. This role is targeted for someone who is excited to learn cutting edge technology, motivated to push the boundaries of what is possible in pursuit of elevating developer experience, application deployment, and cloud strategy. This position will report to the Associate Director of Research IDS Technology & Platforms and will partner with individuals across the Research IDS organization to deliver and enable publication and visualization tools.
As a software engineer, you will be part of the RIDS team designing, building and operationalizing platforms for processing data and managing analytics. You will utilize best software engineering practices to bring rigor and automation to the tools and systems you will build. You will be leveraging both on-prem and cloud-based infrastructure making right architecture decisions to help move science along faster. You will partner closely with Research IDS leadership, Infrastructure and Info-Security organizations to ensure that your architecture decisions align well. Most importantly, you will have the opportunity to work in a highly technical, high pace, team focused, and scientifically challenging areas to accommodate ever-changing research environment.
Key Responsibilities/Objectives:
• Serve as a technical subject matter expert (SME) for the Research IDS Publication and Visualization Applications and Technologies. Technologies / methodologies including databases, Python, Microservices, AWS, Microsoft Azure, API development, GitHub, Docker, Jenkins and Agile
• Collaborate with the Research architects & architecture community to expand and improve the Publication and Visualization capability as it supports Research apps & data science work.
• Contribute where appropriate to new & existing open-source projects.
• Architect publication and visualization applications using modern architecture principles such as micro-service design.
• Drive workable, simple (where possible) solutions with a re-use methodology to promote future reduced "time-to-value"
• Ensure timely escalation and resolutions of issues (project / operations) with appropriate follow through and team engagement
• Develop deep understanding of data appearing from different Research domains such as chemistry and biology
• Engineer quality and security into systems as well as develop and maintain documentation that accurately reflects the current state of the systems
Experience Expectations/Basic Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Management or related field
• .net & asp core experience
• 2 years of experience working with databases, Python, microservices
• 2 years of experience working with cloud technologies including AWS or Microsoft Azure
• Expertise working with complex data and data integrations - API development experience preferred
• 2 years of experience as a product owner (Service management, Product roadmap execution, Lead DR exercise, Implement security etc)
Additional Skills/Preferences:
• Participate in all aspects of the software development life cycle for AWS solutions, including planning, requirements, development, testing, and quality assurance
• Troubleshoot incidents, identify root cause, fix and document problems, and implement preventive measures
• Educate teams on the implementation of new cloud-based initiatives, providing associated training as required
• Employ exceptional problem-solving skills, with the ability to see and solve issues before they affect business productivity
• Demonstrated experience and deep knowledge of systems and the integrations between infrastructure technologies (i.e. servers, operating systems, networks, firewalls, security) and applications
• Previous experience utilizing DevOps in projects such as GitHub, Docker and Jenkins for CI/CD
• Experience working with Agile frameworks
• Demonstrated versatility in technical leadership, project management, and systems/software development and implementation.
• Experience working with teams across organizational and geographic boundaries and multiple levels in the organization.
• Experience with distributed architecture concepts, other programming languages, environments, authentication protocols, metrics and reporting tools
• Strong teamwork, self-management, problem-solving abilities
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Experience in multiple common languages
• Understanding of chemistry/biology system development or support experience
