Job Description

A better place to work. Better work to do. Agile Six is a people-first, remote-work company that serves shoulder-to-shoulder with federal agencies to find innovative, human-centered solutions. We build better by putting people first. We are animated by our core values of Purpose, Wholeness, Trust, Self-Management and Inclusion. We deliver our solutions in autonomous teams of self-managed professionals (no managers here!) who genuinely care about each other and the work. We know that’s our company’s purpose – and that we can only achieve it by supporting a culture where talented people feel valued, self-managed, and love to come to work.

The Role

Agile Six is looking for a Fullstack Ruby on Rails Engineer to join a cross-functional Agile team to develop and maintain a web-based collaboration tool within the VA.gov domain that curates the Department of Veterans Affairs' promising innovations, encourages their diffusion, and fosters engagement with greater healthcare communities. The successful candidate will be performing development tasks on a Ruby on Rails Model-View-Controller (MVC) application as well as building and maintaining a modern DevOps infrastructure that supports the application. They will be developing code “in the open” within an open source project and ecosystem. Most importantly, they will have a passion for working on important problems that have a lasting impact on millions of users and make a difference in our government!

The team is working in the following public GitHub repository:

Responsibilities

  • Contribute as part of a cross functional Agile team to build a scalable web application in an open source ecosystem which supports the diffusion of promising innovations within the VA
  • Develop components and services in Ruby on Rails

  • Develop 508-compliant views and front-end components using javascript, jquery, css, ajax, and other technologies
  • Demonstrate strong communication and team collaboration skills
  • Write automated unit tests and integration tests, and assist in manual testing as needed
  • Participate in all team meetings and functions, including Agile ceremonies
  • As an agile team member, support the team and Product Owner to ensure that work is accurately described and appropriately prioritized, including providing input into user story acceptance criteria and sizing
  • Support the practice of engineering within the larger company as needed through such things as participating in an engineering community of practice and assisting in outreach, recruitment, and hiring efforts
  • We expect the responsibilities of this position to shift and grow organically over time, in response to considerations such as the unique strengths and interests of the selected candidate and other team members and an evolving understanding of the delivery environment

Basic Qualifications

  • At least three (3) years of experience as a software engineer
  • At least two (2) years of solid, full-time professional experience with Ruby on Rails
  • At least 1 year of experience with Javascript/Jquery, css, and ajax
  • Ability to independently complete simple-to-medium complexity tasks and user stories using Ruby on Rails
  • Ability to complete some high complexity tasks and stories with assistance from more senior engineers
  • Experience working with GitHub or other version control systems
  • Has lived and worked in the United States for 3 of the last 5 years

Additional Desired Qualifications

  • Experience developing in the AWS cloud
  • Experience with container platforms such as Docker and Kubernetes
