Software Engineer (Senior Consultant Level) – Platform Engineering

The Opportunity: 

Are you a senior engineer who thrives at the intersection of system architecture and hands‑on development? This is a senior platform engineering role focused on designing and building scalable infrastructure and services that power Visa’s internal AI platforms—enabling engineers across the company to develop, deploy, and operate Generative AI solutions safely, reliably, and at global scale.

In this role, you will help design and build Visa’s internal AI hosting and enablement platform—often described as an “AI playground” for developers—providing the foundational services, APIs, and tooling that allow teams to innovate quickly while meeting Visa’s standards for security, performance, and reliability.

You’ll work on high‑impact platform systems that support billions of transactions, collaborate with engineers across product, infrastructure, and architecture teams, and influence technical decisions that ripple across Visa’s global technology ecosystem. This is a backend‑leaning, full‑stack role with end‑to‑end ownership, spanning system design, service development, integrations, deployment, and operational excellence.

Essential Functions: 

• Design code and systems that touch 40% of the world population while influencing Visa’s internal standards for scalability, security, and reusability 
• Collaborate multi-functionally to create design artifacts and develop best-in-class software solutions for multiple Visa technical offerings 
• Actively contribute to product quality improvements, valuable service technology, and new business flows in diverse agile squads 
• Develop robust and scalable products intended for a myriad of customers including end-user merchants, b2b, and business to government solutions 
• Leverage innovative technologies to build the next generation of Payment Services, Transaction Platforms, Real-Time Payments, and Buy Now Pay Later Technology 
• Opportunities to make a difference on a global or local scale through mentorship and continued learning opportunities 
• Works directly with product owners to gather and refine requirements across products, adding and taking into account existing tools and solutions across the organization.
• Develops and designs advanced architect solutions that are robust and scalable, considering integrations with other solutions across the internal technical ecosystem.
• Provides domain expertise on the development of user documentation of solutions and implements standard processes in user documentation.
• Plays a key role in the development and delivery of new features across products from end-to-end

This is a hybrid position. Expectation of days in office will be confirmed by your hiring manager.

Basic Qualifications:
8+ years of relevant work experience with a Bachelor’s Degree or at least 5 years of experience with an Advanced Degree (e.g. Masters, MBA, JD, MD) or 2 years of work experience with a PhD, OR 11+ years of relevant work experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience designing and building internal platforms, frameworks, or shared services used by multiple engineering teams.
• Strong background in distributed systems, scalable service architecture, and cloud‑native platform design.
• Demonstrated ability to operate at senior consultant scope, including owning architectural decisions, driving technical design discussions, and influencing standards across teams.
• Experience building and operating production-grade backend services, including monitoring, incident response, and reliability improvements.
• Comfort balancing hands‑on development with system‑level thinking and long‑term architectural considerations.
• Experience developing modern services using languages such as Java, Python, or Go, and designing RESTful APIs.
• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and modern DevOps practices.
• Exposure to Generative AI platforms or developer enablement systems, including model hosting, API integration, or AI workflow orchestration.

Travel Requirements: This position requires travel 5-10% of the time.

Mental/Physical Requirements: This position will be performed in an office setting.  The position will require the incumbent to sit and stand at a desk, communicate in person and by telephone, frequently operate standard office equipment, such as telephones and computers.

U.S. APPLICANTS ONLY:  The estimated salary range for this position is $152,200 to $243,700 USD per year, which may include potential sales incentive payments (if applicable).  Salary may vary depending on job-related factors which may include knowledge, skills, experience, and location. In addition, this position may be eligible for bonus and equity.
